Rear window

Rear window
Hey folks! Got an 86 4Runner and the back window works with the button inside but not with the keyed switch on the tailgate. Is there a separate fuse or relay somewhere for that particular switch. Any suggestions on where to start would be great! Thanks

Check the connection to the key tumbler inside the tailgate, mine came unplugged from the back. There is a relay behind the drivers side kick panel and a few components behind the rear passengers, drivers side door panel. You're lucky yours still works!

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the switch that is part of the latching mechanism for the gate. The part of the gate that latches it to the U shaped clips on the body. If you open the tailgate you will see a wire that goes to the latch on the drivers side of the gate. There is a switch there that lets the rear window switch know that the gate is closed. That switch was bad. Why that only effected the keyed access and not the interior switch I'm not sure or don't remember. But it was the problem. I tried rebuilding the switch which worked intermittently until I found a working junkyard unit.

Do the simple first after checking the switch is plugged in
Check to see if the switch works before bypassing anything.
Possible a wire broke where they come out of the hatch.
if it is a open safety switch it most often will not work with either switch.
The power window relay is behind the left seat behind the plastic trim.

If 1st gen is like 2nd gen, the window motor is sent power by grounding 2 different pins at the relay box in the drivers rear side.
A schematic will show the numbers of these pins on the relay box. I don't remember the numbers now.
One pin is up and another is down. The rear key switch transmits no window power, but just grounds one or the other of those pins on the control relay box.
I found these pins when I was installing a switch in the rear cargo area of my '95 that can raise and lower the rear window, even when the ignition is off, just like the key switch in the tailgate does.

Limit switches must not be the issue. They affect both up/down switches. Look at.my thread. When tailgate key is in up or down position it should ground the corresponding up or down pins of relay. If it doesn't, inspect/trace wiring and Check the switch itself. Pay attention to flex harness between body and tail gate. Looking is not enough. Wire cud be broken inside the insulation.

The switch has a clip that comes off from the inside of the hatch. then the switch is pushed to the outside. After unplugging
to remove the trim piece it unbolts from the inside of course the window needs to be in the up position
