Rear diff. Noise

Just replaced the rear pinion seal on 94 pu. I put the nut back where I marked it as I have done on other trucks. This time I got gear noise from the rear differential. Any advice on what I should torque it to? I really don't want to wrestle with pulling axle shafts and shimming ,etc.

did you simply put it back where you marked it, or did you count the number or turns to take off/put on?

I counted turns and marked it. I've always gotten away with this before. Anyone know why it sucked this time? Should I try tighter or looser?

Is there a torque value for the pinion nut? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks y'all.

There is no set torque.
The pinion has a crush sleeve and the nut is torqued down until the correct pre-load value is achieved, as per the fsm.
The torque value specified on other drive flanges, (as on the transfer case), is 95fp, as I recall.
When I changed the pinion seal on my '87, I torqued the nut up to 140fp without increasing the preload any, and it is satisfactory after several thousand miles, and runs as cool, or cooler than it did before, as tested with my Fluke IR gun.
I think that you should be able to torque the nut to near 140fp with no problems, unless you already have pinion bearing or gear-set issues.

Interested to hear if your noise goes away.

thanks millball i think i may need to seat the pinion seal deeper . I've always seated any seal flush with the housing its going into, but it seems like the only thing that may have changed the setup. I will let yall know what happens with 140 on the nut and making sure the seal is seated fully.

Thanks to all. Millball called it. Set torque to 140 ft lbs. Cleared right up
