Rear defrost suddenly stopped working
#1
I got a 92 4runner and all of a sudden the rear defrost stopped working. I checked the fuse for it and thats still good but it doesnt work. Any ideas on what I should check next? Oh yeah the defrost light doesnt turn on either. Thanks for any help

Make sure the window is completely closed. The defroster won't work unless it is. If that's not the problem then remove the inner panel on the tailgate and check the wiring connection on the glass. On my 93 4Runner the wires became detached from the glass. I reattached them with solder.

x2,
My girls 4runner had the same problem, but the light on the switch lit up. I tested the power going to the window and it was like 2v. So I tugged on the wires and the power wire snapped.
It seems after all the years of going up and down the wires get pretty damn brittle....

Oops... I skipped over the part that the defog light isn't coming on. If a disconnected wire on the rear window was the only problem, the defog light would still illuminate (unless the bulb is burnt).
There are two fuses to check for the rear window defog system. Which one did you check, the 20A DEFOG fuse? If so, go back and check the 10A GAUGE fuse. That's the one that supplies power to your defog switch (and light) and provides the switching power to the defogger relay.
Also, eric-the-red mentioned to check that the rear window is fully closed. If the rear window limit switch is not made, it would also prevent the defog light from coming on.
The easiest thing to check first is the 10A GAUGE fuse (although if that was out, you'd have more than just your defogger not working). Next, I would pull the defogger switch out... you can test a lot from there. Disconnect the connector from the back of the switch. There are three wires going to the switch. Not sure if the wire colors are the same on your '92 as they are on a '95, but if so, with the truck running (or with the key to "ON") you should see approx 12V at the black-orange wire and at the black-yellow wire. Also, there should be continuity to ground at the blue-white wire. Give that a shot and post up your results.
