radio ground wiring

1992 4runner v6 at 4x4
my truck had the original am fm only radio with the pocket underneath it. when i installed a new head unit it wouldnt work.
checked the constant and accesory power for power.
the constant had 12ish volts but the accesorry had like 143 volts.
how does that happen???
also does the ground wire coming from the truck in the radio harness nee to be connected?? the radio is currently working with its own chassis ground.

my dome lights and door lights dont work anymore and neither does the clock.

You should not have to run a new ground wire to get the new head unit to function. If the ground in the stock wiring is not working then you need to resolve that.

The lights/clock issue could be a fuse (or it could be a related ground wire issue) - check all the major grounds on the truck and then use a manual to look at the schematic for your wiring and see where the problem might be.

Red face

i will bet you pulled the plug for the clock when you pulled the old radio out.Your dome light also goes through the clock circuit.

So if that is unplugged it might not work.

did you check the Dome light fuse??

You were doing all this rewiring with the negative battery terminal disconnected??

yeah have done a bunch of radios, never had to take the whole dash out to do one though. i had to unplug the clock to get the panel it is in off, but i plugged it back in. i first noticed something was wrong when the rear speakers didnt work. has a basic am fm stocker and i didnt figure it had an internal amp. searched around and didnt find any amp behind the stock hu like is suggested.

okay , everything is put back together and working. was the fuse under the hood for the dome light. was blown where you couldnt see it.
for future reference......the dome fuse under the hood controls the front map lights and dome and clock.
thanks for the help fellas

update...everything was working flawless when i figured it out, parked for a day and now the rear speakers arent working.
kinda confused beause the sub(not the stock one) is still getting power but is not cooperating.
BUT the dome lights , map lights, cig lighter, EVERYTHING else is working but the rear section of speakers, the fronts under the dash are working however.
does anybody know of a spot or a fuse to check for the rear section of speakers only???

the really complicated thing is i CANNOT do any electrical work myself as of today, got an ignition interlock devise on so if i disco the battery it will malfunction the unit and i will get my license revoked.

The rear speakers do not have a fuse protecting them - and based on a fuse blowing when you did the head unit I'm guessing your wiring job may have not gone quite right. Only thing I can suggest is to double check all of your wiring connections - make sure they are good and solid. Another mistake I made in my younger days - make sure you cap off any wires you're not using so you don't short anything out. Also - when you put in the new HU did you cut up all the wires or did you use one of those easy-peasy wiring harnesses to adapt to the stock harnesses?

And for future reference (and for others) ALWAYS disconnect your negative terminal on the battery when working on anything even remotely electrical.

However yours is a special case, so just be super careful.

i had the battery dico's originally, used a harness adapter so as not to cut original wiring, there was a wire that had been tied into for power that sent the fuse out.

as for the problem, the rear speakers work great, on radio only, pt in a cd or use either of the aux inputs(i bought this radio to use my ipod with and live in bumfack nowheres so the radio sucks here)
what would make the rear speakers work with the radio only and not the cd or aux?? worked fine when i put it all together.
