a mechanic recently did a job on the head, but i don't think he did the timing right, truck is sluggish, can't get it to ping by advancing distributor

i put a white square around the mark on the crank pulley

i should put the mark on the crank pulley at zero, and then take off the chain and then rotate the cam shaft and gear together until they are straight as in the photo, correct?

or is it the other way around, or does it matter? just as long as i get them both lined up

Take the timing cover off. Then you will be able to get the odd colored links on the chain lined up with the dimples on the sprockets respectively. Once you get the cover off just rotate the crank clockwise a few rotations until the odd chain links line up with the dimples. If they never line up you will have to pull the chain and install it correctly. If they do line up you will know that mechanical timing is not the problem.
The dimples against the odd colored links on the chain are the ONLY way to time these engines. Even at TDC the neither the camshaft nor the crankshaft dimples are on center when the timing is set properly.

You are looking for this on both the crank and cam at the same time

Yeah, Removing the timing cover is going to cost you a few dollars in gaskets and sealant. But it is well worth it to be sure the timing is done correctly. Let us know what you find. I am betting it is off a tooth or two.

The guy that rebuilt my engine before I bought my truck did the same thing. 10,000 miles down the road later I had a broken timing chain because there was too much slack. If I only would have known!! Good thing you caught it this soon!

 

i knew the timing was off for a while, but had to get in there now because i DID break the guides, so now i can set the timing right and put in the ENGNBLDR kit with the steel guide

Lots of guys have been happy with that kit from what I have seen.

I just dont understand it. These motors are so easy to work on yet this happens alot. My cousin had his 22re messed up by a mechanic as well.

timing guide was shattered ... timing was definitely off ... the crank pulley mark was almost at 9 o clock when the cam shaft was at 12 o clock ... started the engine up and the idling is fine ... I'm still getting a loud knocking sound that seems like it's coming from the rocker assembly near the rear of the engine

 

adjusted the valves?

 

can the valves make noise other than hitting the valve cover? still makes the noise with the cover off, thanks
