Quick paint question

ok so since im going to rattle can my truck to decide which color i want to paint it..

would i need to sand through the clear coat completely???? or could i just rough up the surface perty good and start layin coats down???

once i decide which color i want to do...i'll sand the truck down to basecoat..primer it..then bascoat it..then clear coat it!..so i will do it right eventually..but to save on material costs..im going to rattle can it first!..thanks in advance guys!!

are you just sanding an painting a part to see what the color would look like on your rig? if so i would just paint a piece of white card board or just sand a single spot down and paint that. when you go to paint the whole truck, bonding the paint to the surface is the very importat, so like stated above i would sand all of the clear off and then rough up the old base pretty good, this should give you a good bonding surface.

hi i am a pro painter of 19 yrs get some 600 grit paper or 3m gray scotch brite pad and scuff the clear, you do not have too sand off the clear to the base coat, anything less than 600 you will see all your scuff marks since spray can paint is very thin paint'

seems weird that you would not need to take off the clear at all, firttimer, i am not saying that i know for sure, but it seems like it would not be a good bonding surface to paint over the clear even if its roughed up with a 600. can you explain how this would work? would the clear start chipping over time even with the rattle can on top?
Thanks (just painted my first truck and still learning, like to ask q's to understand)

paint

you do not need to sand all the clear off to get paint to stick just use 600 like he said make sure everything is sanded and there is no shiny spots . good luck

yeah I don't see any issues with the rattle can paint sticking to the clear coat, SO LONG AS YOU ROUGH UP THE CLEAR COAT

you only need to rough the clear, if anyone tells you any different they're a friggin idiot, kinda like those homo ricers that primer their WHOLE car, you dont need to, primer is only used to give the paint something to hold to other then bare metal or sealer. and to fill small imperfections if yer lazy and hate glazing putty like me...

as others have said just rough up the clear. I always wipe down the paint before and after sanding with some wax and grease remover.
