quick little Q on rear-view mirrors/dome lights / 3rd gen PU and 2nd gen 4Runners

I'm just curious of something here...

My base-model PU has the regular ol rear-view mirrow and dome light assymbely that has the single light:

now, what kind of modifications, if any, need to be made to accomidate the style with the 2 individual lights?

I don't have one yet; I scrounged this picture up with Google.

Also, what years are interchangable and will fit on 91 PU? It appears they look almost exactly the same as the mirror assymbelies that went into later models like 97, 98, and so forth?

Thanks guys!

No problems

I just did the same swap from a 93 4Runner into my 92 truck, and all I had to do was trim the headliner a bit. All the screw holes were already there, and the plug is the same. Now I just need to swap the rest of the interior over.

what about the first gen runners that had a seperate light right behind the rear view mirror, two different units, if i find a way to get the headliner off will their be mounting holes in my 86 base truck?

Cut holes in the headliner and bolt it up. The bolt holes are there, and the electrical connection should be there. Two wires, both power wires, it grounds through the mounts.

Im swaping in one of those into my girlfriends 4runner, her rearview has no light at all! Talk about anoying at night.. Im used to my truck

picked up a rear view mirror(adjustable) and seperated dome light with individual side lights out of an 89 sr5

pulled the headliner back on my 86, and no more mounting holes behind the rear view mirror 3 bolts.

i think i can make it work though by making a plate that mounts to the rear view assembly and extends backwards, and have the 2 holes drilled to mount the dome light.

now i gotta figure out how to finish taking off my headliner to paint it...cant get past the metal bars that go across teh cab.

i know i posted late last night and nooones even seen this but i hvae a question.

i only have the one plug/2 wire to my old dome light/rear view mirrior. i take it that its just a power wire, and ground maybe? and i could splice in teh new dome light power to that one.

making the base plate for it to mount to out of steel would be ok since it needs to be ground anyways through the bolts right?

I did the mirror/map light retrofit and it bolts right up, except my truck didn't have the harness for the lights, I had the base model mirror with no dome light. I found a harness and spliced it to the main dome light harness beneath the pillar cover.

i think its because those lights werent available in 86, would be why i dont have the holes.

3gen/2gen pickups are different the 3gen 89-95 pick-up and 4runner of same period are more or less a plug n play conversion [some additional wiring may be needed on runners and xtra cabs] on 2gen trucks/1gen runners the mounting plate was an additional piece sandwiched between the existing light and the roof.

superbleeder I have a map light mirror assembly in gray that is yours for $10+shipping. [what I paid the scrapper].

I just did the map light conversion on my girls 4runner. Was super easy, considering there was nothing there before (no light, just a mirror).

Took about an hour from making a template of the backside of the lights, cutting the holes (her headliner used a 5mm thick sheet of cardboard) and robbing power from the rear light..

The two wire power clip is a constant power and a switched power (when doors open). The lights ground out through the mounts

I'm not trying to be that guy who brings dead threads back to life but I just did this as well and it works perfectly. Basically plug and play as the others have said.

And I'm not trying to be that guy who asks that guy a question that brought back a dead thread....what is your vehicle and year? I have a 94 4Runner that I have to put in the mirror/map light combo. Just one question, is the harness already there? Just wondering what year/truck yours is that was plug and play. Thanks.
