Research is Needed

Well, I'd have to look at the radio or CD schematics and maybe pipe the audio signal in as an alternative. This way maybe I can take advantage of the existing circuitry.

[Edit] My solution for my current system is to splice a 1/8" stereo jack into the CD audio feed lines for the radio. When not jacked-in, the radio receives the normal signal from the CD player. When jacked in, the CD signal is disconnected and replaced with my MP3 input. Should work fine, but this is the initial plan.

Can someone point me to a thread or link on how to incorporate the factory green illumination wire to the red/black-stripe wire dimming ground circuit on a new aftermarket Sony head unit? Can it be done?

Note: 19 years ago, my truck came with that exact double-DIN tuner/tape/CD unit pictured above in this thread. Thieves stole my truck three months after I bought it and took this double-DIN unit with them, clipping the factory harness. An insurance repair shop put in a Sony tuner/cassette player in place since but it's been cutting out recently. From the start, the illumination's always been ON no matter what. It'd be extra slick to be able to sync the dash/cluster illumination lights factory-style with this new head unit.

Mike26,
Check Stock87's later reply in my thread. In that reply, I soldered a connector to the smaller module that I then connected to the lone red/blk wire with the (blue?) plastic module (see pics.) The red/blk wire is the 12-. controlled by the dash dimmer. In my radio, the backlight feature doesn't incorporate a connection to ground. Both the 12+ and 12- supply comes through the modular wire connections. Hope this answers your question.

Yeah, but I'm not trying to wire up the dimming circuit on an O.E. radio. I'm trying to do it with an aftermarket (universal) unit.

Ahh, my bust. I didn't read your message close enough. Only thing I can advise is to start with a copy of the Sony's pin-out diagram from their tech. support. Sorry, good luck.

Hey, no worries. I still learnt something nonetheless. Yeah, a co-worker of mine suggested the same thing -- get a detailed print of the unit and go from there. All in all, maybe one day when I have more free time I would, but I was just checking to see if there's a common thing people do with an aftermarket unit to make it work.

Note: I posted here because I really try to avoid starting a new thread.
