I tried searching but maybe i didn't word it correct.

Got a 89 4Runner with a 3.0, sometimes when starting off from 1st it'll bog, and sometimes when shifting into 2nd it'll do the same thing, basically when i give a lot of gas it'll bog, changed the fuel filter and changed the fuel pump today but it made little difference.

Just need some idea's on what else to check.....i'm a noob at fixing engines, thats why my brother usually does it (he's a mechanic) but he hardly has anytime.

 

id say check for vacum leaks and the TPS. the tps can really mess with you if its set the wrong way.

 

what are the chances that your catalytic converter is clogging up?

some people don't like this method, but I use WD-40 to check for leaks. Using the little straw, I spray just a little anywhere I think it could possibly be leaking and if the engine changes RPM's then you have found the culprit.

 

A brake or carb cleaner works great for this test as well. Just spray some around all your vacuum lines and gaskets and see if your idle rpm changes.

 

somebody else told me to check the TPS also, will spray some carb cleaner to check for leaks, my throttle body is DIRTY inside....all this black crude! should check my cat...it's still the original one.

TPS is mounted on Throttle Body on other side from where accel. cable cable connects , here are the service and test specs for TPS for 3.0 out of FSM:

If you got all that black mess in your Throttle Body I would definately clean that , TPS will mess with throttle / power as I had the same problem with mine recently before I replaced and adjusted the TPS .
Also , I don't know if you have replaced your plugs lately but when I replaced mine I did not get the NGK or Denso's and the factory gap for the aftermarket plugs were
.044" and they are supposed to be .031 for that motor , made a big difference on my motor after getting gap right .
I also had a bad vacumn leak it turned out at the Idle Adj screw on the throttle body as well , if you unscrew the Idle Adj Screw all the way out there is a 0-ring on it to prevent vacumn from leaking by it , the dealer said they cannot order the o-ring for it so I used one from a plumbing repair o-ring kit and greased it with some dielectric silicone and re-installed , worked beautiful and also stopped my Idle from wandering up above 1000 when I stoppped at a light .
Another thing that helped my motor drastically was running a can of Seafoam thru my fuel system with about 8 gallons of premium and using an additional can of Seafoam thru the intake - sucking it up in one of the vacumn lines on the Throttle Body , this cleaned the Throttle Body well but if you have a large build up you should remove Throttle body and clean or if you clean on car then at least take each vacumn line loose and spray out into Throttle Body to make sure port is clean and working properly .

Air Filter Clean ? I know its a stupid question but would definately cause some problems .
And previous post about Catalytic Converter could cause it too but it would seem the power loss would be consistent throughout the rpm range if that were the problem.
Bottom line it could be alot of things , start with the easy and work from there .

 

something we over looked, my coil wire was corroded!! (cap side) changed that out and 4Runner runs good! Checked the plugs today and they was fine, MAF was fine also, took the cap off the distributor and we saw the corrosion......just over looked that part.

I was going to suggest looking at the simple stuff (cap/rotor/plugs/wires, timing, Seafoam) first - glad you got it figured out easy!
