Puff of smoke at start up?

i have a 87 runner with a 22re and at start up it puffs whites smoke for about 3-5 seconds then stops but i dont have any of the other head gasket symptoms like loss of coolant or milky oil what could it be? i am stumped i thought maybe leaking injectors but wouldnt the smoke be blueish?

if you guys could help that would be great
im going to do a compression check this week also

It's probably condensation...nothing to worry about. Keep an eye on your coolant level.

COndensation hmm didnt think of that yeah i been checking my coolant religously because of the HG threads but it seems more of a V6 trend but thanks guys ill keep my eye on the coolant

wouldnt there be coolant in the oil though? or would coolant just leak from internal coolant chanel? if it was coolant of course

its leaky vavle seals, very common on toyotas, even more so on older 22r's but also 22re's.

oil is leaking past the valve seals and being burnt on startup.

I agree this is the most likely suspect. However, I'd do a coolant pressure check to be certain. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES pressurized beyond what the FSM calls for (I THINK it's 12 psi) or you could pop a HG yourself.

But Oil would burn black, not white... My first guess was leaky seals too, but once he said white smoke, I knew it wasn't oil.

have you seen oil burn? its grayish white...
however a fuel problem would cause black smoke

yeah, for example, watch a 2-stroke enginge, like a dirtbikes exhaust, it burns white from the oil that must be added to the fuel.
