Power Steering Return Hose

I need to replace the PS return hose on my '87 4Runner. At this point the original hoses are discontinued. I read a lot about using 3/8" hose instead of the original 10mm, and tried to install one. There was no way to install it without heat, and after trying in vain to heat the hose, I decided that that path was not for me.

I also looked at the Cohline 10 mm ID hose, but its OD is a lot smaller than OEM, and I was concerned that the OEM clamps may not seal it properly.

So I found that the return hose for the 2nd Gens is still available, but is 1.5" shorter than the 1st Gen. I bought two of them to try, and it is long enough to reach. However, once I installed the cold air pipe at the air cleaner, the hose was a bit short. It reached, but looks clugey.

So I'm on the verge of making my own longer hose by swaging two sections of this OEM 10mm hose together. Anyone have any better options before I go down this path?

I recently installed a new Lares pump and all new hoses on my 87 4WD Pickup. I did not purchase "genuine" Yota hoses but I had no trouble finding any of the hoses. Return hose in not under pressure so I wouldn't think you'd have an issue hooking them together with the proper size hose and tubing,

Thanks - can you point me to what hoses you used for the return lines? Were they 10 mm or 3/8"?

I used Edelmann hose, part number 71350. It's 3/8". The Edelmann website suggests a different part number for our trucks but both are 3/8". I even installed an inline filter (so added two more cuts and clamps) and it's been leak free .

Thank you! A filter actually sounds like a great idea.

I just overhauled my power steering system, and I replaced the feed hose from the reservoir to the pump. It was discontinued also, but I looked at the RN8/9 and it looked the same. So I took a chance and ordered. The feed hose has some weird bends to get around the steering column shaft. It was a perfect fit.
But I don’t recall anything unusual about the shape of the return line, so bulk would probably suffice.
I did install a filter. I just didn’t have the heart to cut up my brand new feed hose, so I stuck it on the return line. I got one made of metal that could be opened and cleaned. Besides a screen it has magnets, and a bypass feature. I think the reservoir actually has a finer screen, though. Pulling the reservoir and cleaning the heck out of it, being careful not to violate the internal screen, would be good.

I used an Edelmann hose for the high pressure side, it fit reasonably well. What's the RN8/9 hose, can you point me to a source?

The 84-88 trucks (4Runners included) had vin# that started RN5,RN6, and RN7. The next gen (89-95ish) had vin# of RN8, RN9, and RN1.

I went to Amayama (epc-data works, too) and pulled up the parts diagram for a 1990 RN8 to get the part number for the hose.

Any chance you can dig up the part number from your Amayama order? I'm looking up the RN80 models and they seem to have a banjo fitting on one end of the high pressure hose, while the 1st Gens are flared on both ends.

I ordered the 44348A. You need the 44402B, I assume.

I don't understand why you couldn't get the 3/8" hose to work, there is about .015" to .025" difference in diameter. Did you lubricate the hose and barb?

I had Edelman bulk hose as my feed hose, and it fit the reservoir and pump. I replaced with the oem molded hose just because of the bends.

Ugh, my bad, I thought you were talking about the high pressure hose, but I see you stated reservoir to pump hose. The OEM hose is still available for our 1st Gens - https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/4434835041. I replaced mine a few weeks ago:

I lubricated both ends of the 3/8" hose, but could not get more than 3/4" engagement. I then started using a heat gun, and got the hose so hot that it scolded my hands when I tried to push it on. With gloves on, I was able to more or less push it on fully. But it kept bothering me that I had to put that much heat on a rubber piece, so I ended up removing it. And the removal required me to literally slice the hose in half lengthwise, it was not coming off otherwise. After I removed it and had a close look, I was glad I did, because the feel of the rubber noticeably changed after the heat application.

I do have the 2nd Gen OEM hose on there now, I just don't like the look of it wrapping around the cold air intake tube, because the hose is a bit short. Again, I'm a bit of an outlier because I am trying to restore this truck to being as authentic as possible, so that makes me a bit (a lot ) OCD.
