Ok, I have a question for you guys....How hard is it to remove the front third on an IFS rig? I have a '96 4Runner I'm parting out ( https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f189...4-auto-269880/ ) and it has 4.56 with the factory E-locker. I'm keeping the locker, but I don't know about the gears. It would be easier to just re-gear the rear third to my 4.10's and save the work of messing with the front, but I kinda want the 4.56 having 33's.

Let me know what you think.

This is a confusing question. And doesn't have any pictures. Go read a bit on Gearinstalls.com. It's not particularly hard, but requires a special tool and knowledge-base to swap the gears. I've got no idea about the E-locker though. Be sure to grab the wiring bits! Removing the third aint that hard though, just get everything in the way out of the way then unbolt it. The only reason I don't have 33s yet is because of my truck's 4.10s and the hilly terrain around here, go 4.56s. That's just my opinion, though. I'd love me some 4.88s when I put a locker in.

Thanks! I've got no idea what color it really is. This truck was definitely a resto about 4 or 5 years ago. There's a tiny bit of rust starting on the bed seam so I'm going to be getting it fixed at a body shop, mainly so I can get them to color match the paint and can me some. It is a sweet blue though.

meh, it's a weekend/long-day job. undo the drive shaft, undo the axle shafts, 3 big bolts and a bfh should get the whole thing out. re-gearing is something else; i'm not sure how to go about that. but you can drive it as a "2wd" while you get the diff re-geared

lockers are a type of differential... I was unaware you could separate them...

As far as I knew, you could replace the gearing.

Hey Wii, I was just discussing this with a buddy the other day. As far as basic lunch box lockers like us Spartan or lock right owners, you can change the gears up without ever removing the locker from the housing. with an e locker I am NOT positive. from what I was told..... Hmm... I'm trying to remember..... It was kind of confusing. It was either that you can't change over to aftermarket gears or something of the sort..... Factory gears are a different width or something of the sort, and with an E locker you have to use the same gear ratio? I can't remember to be honest. It seems like something of a no turning back type of deal.

There was one thread I found real quick on something but I'm not sure it's going to have all the info you want....

Dont know what caused it. motor has never over heated, never run out of oil, rarely did i run it up above 4500rpm. there's only 33k miles on the motor since the rebuild. It has to be workmanship I guess. it came without warning too, no knocking besides the two *clack* *clack* then a *bang* and then the motor locked up instantly. I'm just glad it happened in my driveway and not on a pass in CO or on the Indian reservation in Nothern Arizona where theres no cell service or people lol

ring and pinion are technically not the differential, they are what turn the differential from the transmission, and they are replaceable, the differential itself is the case, pin, pinion gears, and side gears. if its an LSD, Locker, or spool.

ring an pinion are the final drive gear reduction, the differential is just so that the axles can turn a different speeds around turns

thats why a locked rearend will "hop" around turns
