POSI rear

I have a posi rear from a 94 runner and it has a 4.56 ratio. I want to put the posi in my 1995 4runner which has a 4.10 ratio.
Can the posi be put into the 4.10 and if so does the ring and pinion gear need to be removed to do this or can the posi be removed without touching the ring and pinion gear.

Any help thanks!

Frank

He can only do that if he changes the front diff too, otherwise the gears won't match. You would probably want the 4.56 gears anyway, so I say swap both diffs if you must.

I want the 4.10. I get better mileage with them. I just want the posi.
The vehicle has plenty of torque with the higher gears I just want the RPM's to be lower at hiway speed. The vehicle has a Diesel and I need to keep the RPM's lower than 2700 @ 65mph. Thats why I have the 4.10's. I just figure that since I have the POSI unit I might as well use it. I know I can use it I just need to know if I can do it or not. If I have to "set up" (align) them to install the posi then I need professional help.

I'm very jealous of your Diesel...

Unfortunately I suspect the Posi carrier will be different (incompatible with spider gears, and visa-versa) so gear set-up would probably be required...

I bet the posi would work fine. Toyota hasn't changed they're axle design in 20 years: still 30 spline 1.3" major diameter. And the 8" diff has remained unchanged for nearly as long.

It will require gear set up, as you would have to unbolt the 4.56 ring gear from the posi and bolt up the 4.10. That would require bascially tearing the whole thing apart.

Look at Zuk's webpage www.gearinstalls.com, and look for the Supra LSD in a V6 carrier. Same idea.

The diesel is great. It also allows you plenty of options ie bio, heating oil, veggie oil, etc...
The conversion cost under $4,000 and was worth every penny.
The vehicle is reclassed and retitled in NY State as a diesel vehicle with no emissions requirement on the inspection.
Lots of work though, I probably have over 200 man hrs into the project but it is a great driver. The Toyota 2lte 2.4 litre turbo diesel has more power than the 3.0 v6 and is excellent on the highway, the turbo creates plenty of acceleration for passing. It is no racecar though.
They make a 3.0 turbo diesel that is a better and more powerful engine but the cost to get one is about $5,000. I may do one in the near future on a 3rd generation runner.

A diesel has excellent power down low, where as a gasoline engine would need higher rpms to make optimum power. So for a diesel engine, 4.10's would be a better fit, unless the tires are very large. Also, the red-line on a diesel is low, only like 3500rpms I think...

The little 2lte does rev up into the 4k range but I drive pretty easy and 3000rpms is fine but I like have experimented enuff and 2500 to 2700 it gets the best mileage which is between 26 and 28 mpg. I got 24 all summer with the AC on MAX and city driving. Not much difference between city and hiway mpg's

Do you have pictures of the swap? I'd be realy curious to see what you faced when doing this.

As far as emissions...god I'm glad I live in Canada

toyotadiesel.com

There are numerous swaps posted with all kinds of pics, I go by same username over there.

Here is a link to some of my work:

http://toyotadiesel.com/photopost/sh...puser=610&sl=s

It is a little intimidating so dont get too scared!

I chose an EFI diesel so I need to use its ECU and Harness.
