Ok guys. So my 90 pickup tends to make a dieseling valve noise when I accelerate. Kind of like the same noise when you are letting out the clutch and you dont give it enough gas and it soulds like a diesel just before its about to die. Ok heres where it gets weird. It does not do in when in neutral or when the clutch is pushed in. I can rev up the engine when in neutral and it does not do it at all, but as soon as I start to drive especially when im arould 3k in 3rd gear it gers really bad. But then you push in the clutch and its gone. Then back into 4th and on the gas and it makes th noise but not as bad unless I stop on it and the engine is under a load. Other than that it runs great. Oh yeah just in case you want to know. Its a 3vze and just turned 109,000 miles. Had head gaskest replaced, Timing kit at 67,000 miles. Any help would be great. Thanks guys

run better fuel its probably spark knock that u are hearing.

Well I just went out and put premium in it. It seems to not be making the noise anymore. At least not as loud as before. However, I did not take it on the highway yet, but I will find out in the morning.

Ao that noise could mean the head gasket is going again?? Im not sure that I understand. I mean I understand the fundamentals of engine operation and how everything works. But Im really not familiar with the 3.0. I have alot of experience with the 22re bu not this engine. If you could explain that would be very helpful.

You can get a leak between cylinders and this will cause a lean condition. Lean = ping. Or if you are buning coolent one of the cylinders can get very hot causing a ping (pre-ignition). Yours sounds very load dependent so i would be leaning towards the timing or bad gas.

 

Flash, Thanks for the quick response. Yeah Im not burning/losing any coolant right now.(I hope it stays that way). Like I said on my way to work tomorrow I will really get a better idea if the premium gas made a difference or not. It seemed like it did on the way home from the gas station but I really couldnt open it up. And I will have to check out the timing tomorrow. Thanks again so much for the tips/advice. Im really trying to learn as much about this 3.0 as I can. I appreciate it.

 

My buddy just went through a whole "pinging" process with his Ford Xploder. Check your spark plugs, white plugs mean it's running too lean.

You may have to go through a whole process to clean out all the build up in there to make it go away for good. I can ask him what exactly he did.

Well Since I put the premium in theres no more ping coming from the engine. Looks like I will have to be spending some extra cash for fuel now. Thanks for all the help guys.

 

I had a pinging problem with my 22re. Changed the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor and ran some SeaFoam through a tank. It went away after that....

 

If putting premium gas in helped the pinging go away, I'd be willing to bet the timing is just a bit over-advanced or the sparkplugs are too hot (wrong heat range)... or maybe there's a vacuum leak hiding somewhere... or... maybe the O2 sensor was fouled by the conditions that required the headgasket be replaced and is now showing symptoms it needs replaced.
Personally, I'd re-set the idle speed and timing to stock and install 'stock' plugs (brand and heat rating) and see how it goes before doing anything else.

Called my buddy up, his solution was a lot easier than I expected. Check the MAF sensor & make sure it's clean in there, could be what's causing it to run lean.

Once you figure & cure what's causing the ping Seafoam the engine, my friend used Carburetor Cleaner, but Seafoam is preferable.

 

I really need to do a seafoam treatment soon. I usually do them about every 3-4k miles. It was one of the first things that I did. Thanks for the heads up I appreciate it.

 

The 3vze has no MAF. It's a VAFM and not as subject to problems caused by dirt/buildup.
