Piston Ring End Gap 22re

Hi All,

Rebuilding my 22re for my 89 4x4 pickup. I got some new piston rings from Sealed Power. While checking the ring fitment in my cylinders prior to installing them on my pistons, it seems like my No. 2 ring is consistently too tight per the Toyota FSM specs. All four cylinders are gapping at 0.015 - 0.016 thousands. FSM says minimum for No. 2 is 0.023 thousands. No. 1 ring and the Oil groove rings check out fine per the FSM.

My question: Can this rebuild work with the No. 2 rings at 0.015 gap or should I file the rings to open the gap to 0.023 thousands?? Advice would be much appreciated! Also, this is a regular overhaul not racing, etc.

Thanks,
