piston ring, dumb question!

ok, so im building a new motor "22re" and today i got the crank installed and #'s 1&2 pistons in, but on the 3rd one i broke a compression ring while putting it on.
it was a dumb move i got in a hury and was being careless. anyway here are a couple of questions.

1. the new pistons and rings came as a set, can i just order some rings from napa and use those or do i need the same kind that came with my pistons?

2. when i get my 2nd new set of rings, would it be alright to leave the other rings on numbers 1&2 and just put the new ones on 3&4? or should i pull them them back out and replace them all? i mean they are all new anyway.

sorry for the dumb questions, and thanks in advance!

You should replace all the rings. While the motor was apart all the rings should have been changed. Ide pull all pistons out and replace them all.

Okay, were the rings all new?

If your putting in new rings the just get another set and put only one you need on. I don't think you'll need all the same brand...unless they are a different material...I am not sure of.

lol sorry for the confusion, everything is new and the motor is still apart. the only thing installed in the block is the new crank and the new pistons with the new rings #'s 1&2. im just wondering if my new pistons are compatible with regular napa rings? or do i have to have a matched set"piston&rings" like the ones that came with my new pistons?

I have no clue about that...if they are different material then I would say remove them and try again!

thanks lol, i dont have a clue either. its probably no big deal. any type/brand of rings will work is my guess, but who wants to guess on a new motor lol.

anyone else got a thought on this situation??

since you're putting on new rings and pistons, you can just replace the broken ring.
best bet is to contact where you got the pistons/rings from and ask for help getting the correct parts.
otherwise, the only things you have to worry about is the bore diameter the rings were meant for (stock, .010 over, etc.) and that the end gaps are all to spec and the same when installed in the bore.

ahh... thanks abe i new you would come to my rescue! just for info its bored .040 over. i called napa and they said they could get me a set but not until tuesday. the 2 pistons/rings i have installed, the end gaps were perfect acording to the haynes manual. you think i could leave those in there?

maybe do a product test, altrom rings in the front 2 pistons and napa's in the back? lol

yep, you'll be fine. Like I said, as long as the rings are for the bore size and the end gaps are to spec, you'll be okay.
