Like all Toyotas I ahve the pillar rust on the passenger side on the windshield frame. My question is what have you guys used to treat the rust? Right now i have no time to do it "right" but pulling the glass and getting under it. I am curious if there is any rust converters (that arent acid) that will flow like water into the rust area? I thoguht bout Ospho but that will eat the heck out of the rubber seal.

 

The rubber seal is urethane adhesive. It's really, really tough. I don't know of any chemicals that will dissolve it so that's not an issue. A rust converter is probably not going to do much for you unless you get the loose scale off first which is going to be hard to do with the glass in place.

 

Fortunately i do not have much scale. The rust isnt bad (from the outside) so i want to treat what is visible. No telling what it looks like under the seal, but since i am not in the rust belt i can hope it isnt that much.

 

When a person has a rash on the outside of their body that is visible it is usually 10 times as bad on the inside.

DIY in fixing the rust and r/r the windshield and you won't be out anything more than the windshield replacement materials and whatever it takes to fix the rust. I fixed one on my 87 and the windshield was perfect but it cost me $100 to have it professionally r/r (I didn't have the time at the time) so I could fix the rust. Wire brush, some welding and cleanup with a grinder, some primer and paint and it was done. Given, it was some spray paint from Lowes.

I'd do it now...ASAP...as it will only get worse (on the inside)

 

Usually what causes the rust is when someone who replaces the windshield doesn't properly prep the surface after they dug out the urethane with tools. All the Toyota trucks I have owned had the windshields replaced and rust around the pillars.

The problem is that dirt and debris get trapped under the trim and it holds water causing the rust. Whatever rust is visible, you can expect 10x more that's hidden.

 

Chainsaw bar oil. It will keep it from getting worse until you can fix it. That is what I undercoat with.

 

i agree with the wabbit. it is like cancer, get it all or it will come back.
