So I have finally decided to paint my truck myself. Since I wanted to keep costs low I decided to used a roller and Rustoleum Topside for the body and KBS rust seal for the frame instead of POR-15 which just cost way too much.
Also, since there's snow up here in Wisconsin my parents let me use their new garage/house that they haven't even moved into yet




The KBS that I decided to use was a kit that included all the supplies needed to paint the trucks frame as well as preping and cleaning


All preped and ready for paint! I had to wash the frame 3 times to get all the dirt off before I could lay down any paint.


And painted.








For the bed of the truck I decided to cut out a lot of the rust instead of trying to repair it all. I think the bed looks a lot better with it cut out.





The first coat of paint. I used a Rustoleum metal Primer. Took forever to dry. Like 3 days.




And with the first coat of the Topside rolled on.





I still need to put about 2 more cloats of paint on the truck so it will cover well enough. Stay tuned in for the results and more pictures.

Yea i just used it as my paint shop. With rolling the paint on I dont have to worry about any over-spray !

 

Holy !!! you roled it!! nice!! I cant wait to see the finished product!! Im painting my truck but it cost lots more than just tape and the paint haha!! I have to buy a 60 gallon Compressor, paint gun, filters and lots more!

I wish I had a sprayer to paint it. Each time I put a coat of paint in it takes about 3.5 hours to do. All the rollers and brushes i have a are the cheap throw away ones. It makes clean up a breeze.

Toytoyfreak what kind of paint are you using on your truck?

 

Industriel tremglad 75% flat 25% clear and for the bottom part of my doors and tailgat im using gravelguard paint! im in canada so i have like 6 in in the winter time!

Looks good. I would have just left the primer on it and thrown a clear coat on but that's just me.

 

I can see why your parent's havn't moved in yet. The house isn't finished. I'm laughing because when my parent's built a house when I was a teen we had to move in early because our lease was up in the apartment we were livng in. The hot water heater wasn't hooked up till a week after we moved in. I hated boiling water to add to the bath water, but I hated cold showers worse.

Truck look s good. Nothing wrong with a roll on paint job.

 

KBS is a good product and I used it on an axle. Also you can coat the frame all you want but Toyota frames rust from inside to outside. Sorry but your frame will still rust out.

There are other ways to prevent it. coast the outside, clean the inside thoughly, throw some oil on the inside, and plug all the holes. Drive with the oil in for a bit so it sloshes around and covers it all, then drain it and replug the holes

 

Tremglad is pretty much the same thing as Rustoleum. The reason that I went with the Rustoleum Topside was because its a better self-leveling paint and it also has some UV protectents in it.

As far as my frame, I figured if I was going to put a new coat of paint on the body of the truck I might as well paint the frame too so that there is a new coat of paint on every thing.

I know it's a Toyota... the rust never stops

 

Get a spray wand a spray the inside of the frame with a rust inhibitor. It's what I did for mine.

 

Okay so here's an update: I got bored waiting for the paint to dry so I bought a pair of generic truck mud flaps and mounted them using 1/2" threaded bolt some cable clamps and an existing hole in the frame. I think they turned out real nice. Hopefully they will work better than the stock 2wd mud flaps.



In the past few days I was also able to get 3 more coats of the Rustoleum Topside on the truck. So that makes 4 coats of Topside and 1 coat of primer that I used. As far as sanding the truck, I did that after the 2nd coat with 600 grit and after the 3rd coat with 800 grit. Gonna let the paint cure for a few days and then button it all back up and then do some drivin in the snow up here in WI. Here are some pics of the progress so far.





Oh yea, also put a roll on bed liner to top it all off. I used Plasti-kote roll on bed liner paint.

 

I still can't believe that paint is roll on.
