1) sand with 220 sand paper
2) Clean and wipe with the cloths
3)prime with two or three coats.
4)wetsand with 600 grit
5)Wait for it to dry then hit it with some Krylon Fusion satin black thinking 3 coats or so.
Thank you richf and Swimmerboy2112 helped me out a lot might start sanding tomorrow any other info would help alot or any thing i should add or do different in the list above
You're welcome

Only thing i would change is wipe with the cloths AFTER you wetsand the top and after it dries.

If you have any more questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

I did 3 coats of krylon satin black over a year ago, and it did dull a bit after 2 summers and a bad winter but looks very good and far better then it did before I painted it. if I had to do it again, I would consider a coat or 2 of clear.

Be sure to fill any holes, and don't skimp on the prep. Bondo makes some cheap black primer too, which helps hide things, and gives a more even finish.

The tops were originally a satin black color. I have seen the Fusion recommended for touching up fiberglass outboard motor cowls (tops) so I bet it would work great. One tip if you use a spray can is to put the whole can in hot tap water for about 30 minutes before you spray. It makes the paint flow really well and cuts down on that sputter effect spray cans often do.

I wouldn't clear satin black. I don't think it'd look good.

The tops have a textured finish, if you sand with 220 your gonna sand off the texture. Thats fine if thats the look you are going for but make sure you do it evenly throughout the top or it will look like dog poop.

The spray can stuff looks good for a while but it will start chipping and fading at different rates after about 6 months outside. I'd buy automotive paint from a paint store or online and get a spray gun.

I got this kit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/10-Pc...motiveQ5fTools

Its cheap and includes a primer gun, a top coat gun and a touch up gun.

to rich for my taste lol. This is more of a trail rig not looking to fork of that much cash for some paint. I think it has been sanded before because there is not texture to it and i see runs from the last time it was painted.

I would recommend using a clear coat if you want the paint job to last more than 6 months, especially since it is on the roof/canopy and is exposed to the elements. Most brands including Krylon make a flat clear coat (available at your local hardware store) so it will not give you a glossy finish at all. I used Krylon flat clear coat on top of gloss black when i painted my wheels to give them a semi-gloss look. I have had them painted for over a year now and they still look great, even after some wheeling trips. If you just put the flat clear over the satin black, it won't change the color at all and it will protect the paint. Just my $0.02.

Yeah its good stuff. I know how you feel, I just started grad school and I'm working just about full time so I have little to no time to work on my truck anymore

yeah i'm in the same position with the whole summer-is-ending thing.
I'd like to get it done before it gets really cold here.
I made a bikini top for mine for around $30 with a military surplus tent.

Ps, Any paint in a rattle can is a fail...seriously
