im guessing its the ignition switch, but on my 88 p/u 4x4, every now and then (and it has been getting more frequent) when i go to crank the motor, the starter doesnt want to stop. i have to keep turning the key to the start, then off, then start, then off positiotns repeatedly until i get lucky that it stops.

has anyone else had this happen? would it be the ign switch?

 

could also be the starter solenoid sticking. Easy enough to take it apart and lube it. I think you use graphite lube.

 

ah good point. didnt think of that. ill have to do some more investigating i guess.

 

i think its on the starter side of things. i imagine if it was the relay or ign switch, when i let off the clutch, the circuit wouldnt be complete anymore.

instead, as it is now, i can turn the key all the way off, take it out and get out of the truck and the darn thing will still be turning over. makes for an interesting sight for bystanders. hahaha.

 

ok...update.

removed my starter this morning, opened it up, and cleaned everything.

the solenoid was grimey and contacts were corroded. i cleaned, lubed and degunked the contacts. so far so good. it actually stops turning over when i turn off the ign switch!
