over heating

my 88 4 runn will sipke the temp gage after i restart when the eng is warm
the hoter it is out side the higher the gage goes on restarts i can sit in trafic with the ac on and 95 outside and the gage sits just belo half of the gage the truck has the hg recall done in 98 spedo was done in 01 the prevus owners put lots of new parts .the rader is 5 yrs old water pump timing belt is 3 monts old when i did timing belt i flushed the block and rader heater core with large amunts water preser with great results lots of junk came out mudy stuff
the next week went to set the timing and the balinser was shot so when changing it i flushed the rader and the block again ang got more of the same mess just less .the tstat is new and has a bypas hole in it and tested ok when change it i flushed the rader and block again ang got no mess this time and still have the same prblem of temp spiking on restart prity shure i got the cooling system burped i spent 3 days and 3/4 tank of gas now no bubles but still the temp spike on warm restart after running 1 min the temp is back to norm spot on the gage
any thoughts on this it has the 3vze auto trany

I'd say what you're seeing is pretty normal. An engine is always hottest right after you shut it off. If you go back in five minutes and restart , it 'should' be showing hotter than its normal operating temp. If it's not overheating in traffic with the a/c on at 95 degrees outside air temp, I'd say you don't have a huge problem. Others welcome to chime in on this one.

From what I've seen on these boards,, the factory gauge is not always the most accurate. The actual 'heat' shown on the gauge may not be really quite as high as the needle implies. You might try a different method of testing the heat on your engine right after you shut it off.

You could go and pick up a Autometer or other brand temp guage and see what it tells you. I plan on replacing my temp & oil pressure with aftermarket guages just to keep a better eye on them..
