Hey guys. I was wondering if torsion bars wore out like all other springs. I have an 89 4runner with 225k on it and the ride in the front is pretty harsh. I only have about an inch of up travel. My bars have not been adjusted at all, so I am wondering if I should replace them. I just wasnt sure how or if they did wear out. Thanks guys

 

all springs wear out - torsions included...

 

u can replace them or re-crank them. if uv never touched them they may have just slowly worked themselves down. thats the real reason they are adjustable, so u can fix them once they droop.

 

so do you guys think it would be a good idea to try and crank them? or just go ahead and put some OME's in?

 

im personally going to replace mine with downey 24mm torsion bars. for ur truck it would actaully be the 26mm. heres the pricing and parts number, and the site.

it all depends on what exactly ur lookin for.

 

if i replace them im going to go with the OME's they are just a little bit thicker than stock. so they wont kill the ride to much

 

Crank 'em. It's free. If you hate it, you've lost nothing but the price of an alignment. If it's a lifetime alignment, you've really lost nothing.

 

this is true. on the topic of which bars u would go with, thats totally up to u. dont let anyone convince u otherwise. i was just on their site and figured what the hey.

 

If ya wanna spend $$$ on torsions - there are 300M ones around too - I think Donahoe Racing can get em (where I got mine)...

but back on topic, just crank them a little. Back to stock'ish setting, should feel fine.

 

Yeah - terrible for "crawlin"... great for blasting down fire roads...

There's a page out there that describes in great detail how to crank torsionbars... includign pics of the bolts and the part numbers if the bolts are rusted and the differenece betwn the early and late bolts...

BTW - the bolts are probably seized and you'll need new ones
