Ok I think I found the leak and it's dang small so far.






It seems to be leaking from behind the crank pulley and from around the casing that's bolted to the front of the motor. I hope the pic helps.

Ideas? Is there a "front main" seal up there?

Jason thanks for all the schematics (spelling?) I can't count how many of these I've printed from you posting them.

So we're looking at what a 2 or 3 hour job to replace this little beast?

Anything else I should replace while I'm in there?

If the motor you are working on is the one in the pic, I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult (never did it personally). If it's in the truck...well let's just say that would be a different story.

Looking at the manual, it looks like you will need the O-ring. Have you changed the oil pump already?

 

We did that on my girlfriends 95 22re runner.. The hayes manual said you need to drop the oil pan, which requires the diff to be dropped... WRONG!!

Its a pretty easy repair, just be carefull with the gears inside that pump...

No oil pump change so far and no that isn't my motor in the pic, mine's in the truck. I'll grab the parts and do it in frame with as many pics as I can snap.

Its pretty straightforward. Though I can't remember if I drained the oil before I took it out or not....

 

In that case you might want to do timing chain, oil pump, water pump, etc. Jay would know.

 

Its not a very hard job. The hardest part is breaking the crank bolt loose. I do the ole "leave the breaker bar on there and crank the starter" works every time.

The 4x4 and lifted trucks are easier to change as you can work from the bottom vs having to bend over and reach down from the top.

Don't forget to get the shaped O ring for the pump housing as you will be taking it off to replace the main seal. Good time for belts too as those will be off.

 

Drain and drop rad
drain oil
remove belts
remove crank pulley- don't dare ask, search
the rest is self explanatory if i remember correct

 

We didn't have to touch the radiator.. did you have too?

 

You don't have to actually, your right. I was doing the timing chain so I did that as well. I stand corrected.
