Question IS oil expander ring SPRING necessary?

93 pickup 3vze:
I bought Hastings rings on the web and now realize how different the oil ring expanders are compared to the originals... I also noticed the spring or interior wire is not present, is it necessary? Perhaps I should use the originals with the new rails..

Short answer Yes.

How else is oil supposed to lubricate the cylinders?

I guess a better question is why don't you think you need it other than they look different?

I was not talking about the necessity of the oil ring itself, but more about he little wire that is bent into the original oil expander. its called the inner-spring in the abridged instructions that came with the rings.

that attatched picture shows the new one and an old one.

the new rings dont even have holes for an inner-spring..I guess what it comes down to is which type of oil expander is better? and is the set of rings designed for its exclusive set cooperation for efficiency?

I don't have a whole lot of experience with hastings...ok none, but I would follow hasting's instructions to a "T". Hopefully they mention it...

Hastings invented the multi-piece oil ring. So if they came from hastings like that, then that's the way they're supposed to be.

You should definitely NOT leave the oil control expanders out, or even mix and match brands/types of oil control expanders with oil control rails/rings of a different brand/type. They're in NO WAY interchangeable like that, and THEY ARE NECESSARY.

Just use the new Hastings rings how they came. That's what I'd do.
