Odometer electric on a 92?

Does anybody know if the odometer is electric or mechanical on a 92 pickup? My odometer stopped working but the speed works. Can you help me out?

i have a 92 and my odometer went out last year as well

i spent literally months trying to figure out if it was electric or a cable...every weekend or so i'd find some new forum to post the question on or call another toyota dealership. nobody ever knew for sure. i'm pretty sure its electric.

now, when mine broke, the speedo broke too, and what i ended up finding, was that the plastic gears on the speedometer sensor in the transfer case had been chewed up. i had to go to the junkyard, and i found a new gear of the right size, but it was for a cable speedometer. i had to grind a couple mm off to make the post thingy a little shorter, and add a slot to it so that it would fit in my 92's electronic speed sensor. but it worked fine and its been working for a good 6 months now since then

anyways, yours is probably something else...i believe the odometer and speedometer are both operated by the same cable. and anyways, my 92 is electronic, so yours probably is too. i would think that something is broken inside the cluster....whatever turns the odometer.

Here's a pic showing the electric and mechanical senders (electric is on the bottom) The sender attaches to the transfer case on a 4wd.

I have the same question as Jason. My odometer has stopped, and the speedometer still works. It is in a 1992 2WD pickup, so it is electric. Is there one sensor for both? I assume that the sensor is working since the speedometer works. Any suggestions on how to fix it or even pages in the FSM. The only thing I can find in the FSM about the spedo is on page BE-33 which says "check the operation of the odometer".

The 91's were cable driven and the 92's were electronic. There is only the single speed sensor on the back of the t-case. As for why the odo wont work I have no idea. I've got a km/h speedo cluster from when I did my diesel swap but I don't know if you can just change the odo part or not.

the electronic ones are still cable driven by a motor on the foot well, my 95 has sensor instead of cable but when you pull out the cluster it is cable operated by a little electric motor. you probably have a busted gear in the odo

You can just pull the gauge cluster...if there's a cable in the back of it then its a cable driven odometer...

they are all cable driven on the cluster, its just whether its operated by a motor via speed sensor or tcase cable

Thanks guys, I will pull out the cluster and see what I find. Is there a way to replace a busted gear in the odometer or do I have to replace the whole unit?

My 92 is electric and my speedo works and my odometer doesn't and there is no cable so not all of them are cable driven and there is no lil motor either. im trying to figure out if its the vss in the trans or the t-case or if i just have a bad connection since i have taken my cluster out before to put led bulbs in.

If the Speed registers but the odometer doesn't move there is a stripped gear in the speedo portion of the cluster. (Pretty sure that was mentioned above, but just in case)

It's usually cause by resetting the trip counter while in motion but not always. It wouldn't hurt to check the connections on the back since you'll need to pull it to replace it anyway. And yes you can replace just the speedo if you can find a donor.

... Or that

Not a bad idea to inspect clean and lube them every 20 years..

Not sure if it's 88 and older or 91 and older that have the "sockets" on the fender aprons, I imagine those might be an issue bouncing around.

BUT since the speedo isn't there thats not your problem.

Are the diesel mech or elec speedo? Can't say I've ever seen one, happily since most of the ones I see are in the yard headed for a crusher.

Gonna assume it's electric and tell you check the plugs on the back aren't loose or dirty, and maybe trace down the ground or tighten the screws on the back of the cluster.
