OBD 1 reading

Are there any parts stores that offer a free OBD 1 reader like most of them do with OBD II? Or are there any of you guys in the Snohomish county area with one that I could possibly meet up with?

you need an extremely expensive tool to do the job right. they're rare, and only made between june of 87 and march of 88, so good luck finding one

There does exist a "scan tool" for Toyota OBD 1, but I've only seen drawings of them. They can retrieve information like injector-open-time, fuel trim, etc.

But I think what sqwadoosh wants is a "code reader." And yes, the SST (Special Service Tool) is (now) a paper clip. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...85diagnosi.pdf

Thank you yes that is what I was looking for. I apologize I thought you guys were just having a laugh. So I used a paper clip and this is what I got. I am a little unsure if I'm reading this right but do you guys see a 2-1-5-1?

yup, code 51 and code 21. now you have a good starting point
>code 21 is oxygen sensor
>code 51 is tps idle circuit

(and yeah, we like to give everyone who asks about it a hard time. and now you can tease the next person, haha)

I think 41 is the TPS idle circuit. 51 is "Switch Condition Signal," which isn't really a malfunction. It just means the A/C switch was on when you retrieved the code.

Code 21 indicates a failure of the O2 Sensor heater circuit. Almost always a bad O2 sensor, but those sensors cost enough, and the test easy enough, that's it worth testing it first. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...01heatedox.pdf

So I am having a high idle (1500-2000) once the truck warms up. I read on another post that if this happens to get out of the truck, pop the hood and tap on your tps. If the idle drops then you know your tps is bad. Can anyone tell me if this is true? I did do just that and the idle did come down. I just want to make sure before I spend the money on a new tps. Thanks for all the help fellas.

Before you buy a new one. Test the one you have. I figure thats the best way to find out if its bad.

It's just as likely that you have a good TPS that isn't quite adjusted right. You have to adjust the new one if you replace it, so you might as well check the adjustment on the old one first.
