not so Good Vibrations.....

The Beach Boys must have been singing about my truck..... heres the scenerio... went wheelin last weekend. on the drive home, the truck would vibrate once i got above 55 miles per hour. at 60 it feels as if i;ve drifted too far off the highway and am hitting the rubble strips. figured it was just mud on the tires. got home washed the truck. vibration still there. throught i must have thrown a tire wieght. went to Discount tire today, they rebalanced my tires. they used the single stick on weights on the center not the weights on the outside like before if that makes a difference. now the problem is still there and my death wobbles are even worse. any ideas to check next? (I know i need to fix the alignment to fix the death wobbles, but it was the before the vibration was, so they dont seem to be related)

does it feel like it is coming through the steering wheel or the seat of your pants? if it's the steering wheel, then it is front end' seat of your pants, then it is the rear. what are you driving? checking drive lines and cv's is a good idea. you running manual hubs? still got a hub turned in? or worse yet, a broken or stuck hub? check to make sure your front drive line is not engaged while you've got it parked in the driveway. the only way i know this is cause it happened to my in my '83 a few years back. scarred me at first, but found i had a broken hub that wasn't turning out. those front ends weren't made to go that fast. just some thoughts. hope you find it.

Go tighten all of your leaf spring bolts. That completely eliminated my death wobble.

you might want to have your tires checked for slipped belts, im surprised that the tire guys didnt check for that when you had them rebalanced. the 'death wobble' you describe is more than likely tires.

I say a tire with a bubble in it or loose driveshaft bolts.

Start simple with tires, proper inflation, alignment...try a rotation and see if it goes away.

Check front suspension components, tighten to proper specs, such as steering arms, leaf springs, etc.

Front driveshaft disengaging when you free/lock your manual hubs?

Then start checking u-joints, bushings, etc.

My bet is tires or bolts.

i'm so busy with work the 4runner has taken a backseat. the death wobbles were there a week and half BEFORE the vibration started... in that time i put over 1000 miles on the truck. (thats a different thread yet to be posted, but i drove from CA to WA on 101... amazing drive) the vibration is new as of wheelin 2 weekends ago. i now have a water leaking issue wiht the 4runner (well the blue truck as well but again thats a differnt thread)

long story short... i have lots of problems.

you have another set of tires to throw on it to see if that is it?

or maybe a spare tire you can exchange one tire at a time for? hope you find it.

Ya a few days ago when I went, I got those vibrations as well. I just got under and washed the mud off of everything and it went away. But sometimes when I take a corner at a high speed, I can still feel it through the steering wheel a little.

Maybe we crossed paths on 101 @ Lincoln city Ore? Your rig caught the wobbles from mine?

Contagious wobbles?! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

My truck had a vibration issue that was related to a worn u-joint- replaced it and the vibrations went.
the wobbles could be related to worn ball-joints up front, or blown seal[s] in the shocks since you say this happened after a wheeling session either is possible. So far as tire issues go if the tech was any good he would have caught them when he did the balance you say was done after you got home.
Let us know what it turns out to be pls.
Hope this helped aviator

I have the same vibration. I found out it was the U-Joint. Crawl under there and grab a hold of your drive line. Give it a wiggle. You will feel a bit of a clunk. Thats a bad U-Joint or loose bolts. If there is no clunk then I would say it is tires, or driveline out of balance. I just replaced my U-Joints a year ago and the back back jsut went again. I'm not looking forward to changing it again without the proper tools. I sat there with that thing between my legs for a couple of hours banging it out with a hammer and socket. Not a lot of fun, maybe this time I will just swap it out for a bolt together yoke. Who knows. It a nasty vibration, but I have been driving it daily like that for a couple of weeks and even did a 500 mile road trip with it like that. I'm more worried about the vibration shaking something else loose. I allready had to tear a exhaust heat sheild off because it was making to much noise!

When you swap in new U-Joints again make sure you use greaseable u-joints and they should last longer.

Rear UJoint IMHO. Thats been the case for me more than once. It goes 3:1 times the others, esp if it spends a lot of time submerged.
