No. 2 Speed sensor replacement
Hey guys, I'm new here as I am a first time Yota owner. I bought a 1990 extended cab V-6 with auto transmission recently. I got a pretty good price on the truck cause when I drove it it was running horribly and the guy sold it to me for $1,000 less than his asking price. At any rate the O/D Off light has been flashing so i ran the codes and it gave me the code for the "No. 2 Speed Sensor". The guy I bought it from said there was less than 200 miles on a rebuilt tranny and by all appearances, he wasn't lying. My question is where exactly is the No. 2 speed sensor? I don't want to just start randomly pulling pieces off of my transmission.
Also with that problem, everything seems to shift fine but when I'm going up a hill there is alot of seemingly unnecessary shifting and the gas mileage sucks. I think I'm getting 15mpg at best. I'm only on 31" tires so that shouldn't be the case and when I had it smogged the guy said it passed smog like it was brand new. Will that speed sensor cause the horrible gas mileage?
Btw I resolved the poor performance problem by setting the timing to the proper specs when I got it home. It was all the way retarded when I checked it out. A little twist of the distributor to 10* off and it ran great.

15mpg isn't bad at all for a V6 auto. Mine runs like new and I was getting 12-15 before I did the 5 speed swap.

That diagram is a great help, I think it's probably worse than 15mpg. There is about a 12 mile stretch of road that I travel on a regular basis that is uphill but usually cruise it at about 60-65 and I'll burn almost a 1/4 tank in that stretch. I also still need to figure out if the #2 speed sensor can cause the A/T Oil Temp light to come on.

Just did mine a few weeks ago...you'll love it. My mileage went from 12/15 to 14/19 and it actually responds to the skinny pedal now.

I have heard that putting a 5 speed in will make all the difference in the world. I just gotta convince the wife that a few hundred $ now will save alot more down the road. Her response so far was "why didn't you buy one with a 5 speed in it?" She just doesnt understand. Haha! Wait til I have to explain to her why I need a lift and tires and gears!

I guess what I meant is that if the speed sensor is bad and it is doing alot of unnecessary shifting because of that, will that cause it to get hot? There is a slight leak so I'm going to repair that first and clean all of my connections before I drop some coin on a new speed sensor.

Sweet thanks. I think alot of the problem may be dirty connections since the tranny was just rebuilt and there's a small leak throwing oil all over

Not much to support my opinion, but that's my story.
So I don't think the speed sensor is causing your over-heat, I think your driving style may be.
(By the way, code 61 does NOT say "replace the No. 2 speed sensor." It also includes "severed wire harness or short circuit." You can waste lots of time and money thinking that a diagnostic code just tells you what part to buy.)

^ Good post.
And again, the trans temp light doesn't come on until upwards of 300 degrees F so your floorboards would be cooking if it was really overheating.
