new starter?
I have a 91 Toyota Pickup Ext Cab 4X4 3.0 L My truck has been having trouble turning over. I checked the battery and it wasn't that. How can I tell if the starter needs to be replaced? When I turn it over sometimes all I hear is a click. If I use clutch start cancel and try again it sometimes works. It mostly happens when the truck is cold. Any help would be great thanks!

Try cleaning ALL the wire contacts up. My buddy just had this problem and cleaned it up and it works...for now. He'll be getting new contacts for the starter in the mean time.

The next time it happens have a friend/bystander turn the key to crank the motor while you give the starter motor a few taps with a hammer. If it starts cranking from this then it is definetly the starter.
What this does is dislodge the armature in the starter and/or dislodge the starter solenoid. If this works, then the starter is on it's way out.
You can get by for a while using this method to start it, but it requires that you have a second person there to turn the key (most of the time.)

Check all your ground cables these trucks have IMO poor ground cables from new.
If you get a new/rebuilt starter it will work till the starter gets some wear then you are back to the same problems .
As stated you can easily rebuild the starter but I have found that to time consuming labor wise. Unless it is my own and I am doing it for fun.
It is possible to take it to your local Chain auto parts and have it checked and I have found them to be pretty good.

I took my starter out, and upon inspection the contacts inside were essentially melted or well used if you will.
Wire brush, elctrical contact cleaner, and about .83 cents in new contacts and haven't had any issues in the past 60k.
But that only works if you have the same problem.
