need some gear advice

ive got an 87 pu that has 31x10.5 tires, and i pull a trailer often. i have stock gears, and thinking about upgrading to a different ratio. what gears do you guys recommend for daily driving but also pulling trailer with a load. what brand is a good choice?

auto or 5 speed? i have 4:88's, and they work great, but i probably could have gone with 4:56's. i plan on stepping up to 16'' rims so 4:88's for me.

Check this thread out for info on what gears you currently have:
http://toyota.off-road.com/toyota/ar....jsp?id=274535

There is a good chart at the bottom and an explanation on how to pull your axle code from the door label.

YT gets a lot of "what gears should I run" questions. Search around a bit for some more information.

31" tires are basically stock, so your stock gearing is most likely fine. Most regear for bigger tires.

What are you hoping to improve by changing your gearing?

If you're staying with 15" rims and not going taller than a 31", I'd say 4:56. Although, the rim size doesn't really matter is the height of the tire.

4:88's with 31's pull a trailer with no problem. i carry about 800 to a 1000 pounds. what are you going to pull weight wise? i am in 5th gear a 50mph, but i short shift for gas mileage.

i think 4:88's. 5:29 gears would mean no highway speed. pulling that much weight is going to be hell on your 5th gear bearing, if you have a W56. keep it in fourth if you can. where in texas are you?
