Question Need some gas when starting...?

When I start in the morning usually it takes a couple of secs to crank until it starts. However if I push accelerator a bit and crank holding it then it starts immediately. What could it indicate? New plugs/cap/rotor, all stock. Clean cold start injector, clean injectors, 11* ignition, idles like Swiss watch. The only thing old is ignition wires - I think they are made in 1992

Also when hot and i crank it sometimes it looks like it hasn't started but then it starts up. I.e. I crank it for a moment, release the key but the motor is not started, however as soon as I release it - it comes up...

My AFM is leaned 1 notch so the spring is stiffer - I was thinking maybe the fuel pump is not engaging early enough so connected it manually but it didn't make any difference.

do you get a strong fuel odor when you try and start it several times?

Last time I saw a prob like that it was a faulty fuel pump. We would crank the car several times and finally it would catch. The fuel pump was not dead but took a while to build up adequate pressure to start the car. After, the fuel pump was changed we never had a problem since. Also, check to make sure your fuel filter is not clogged.

X2 on the fuel filter. I wonder if that AFM mod has something to do with it?

I would second the fuel filter before anything else. Do you know when it was last changed?

I use a paint stick and write the dates and mileage on my filters when they are installed.

That could definitely be a possibility but I would imagine that would just make your rig run rough if that was the problem. I think though however when you start your vehicle, cold it is in Open loop mode. In that mode you car will inject a fixed amount fuel/air in the engine to start. If that pump is not functioning properly this cannot happen. If you have a spare afm definitely swap them out to see if thats your prob or get your fuel pressure tested.

I've read alot on that AFM mod and it seems like everybody that does it, has erratic fuel issues. I'm a bit skeptical on this mod and question it's reliability...

Thanks everyone for replies.
Fuel filter is brand new and I did check the "cheap trick" from 4crawler site - even if I pre-run fuel pump for 10sec or so before cranking it makes no difference.
