have you though about taking metal putty knife/scraper and putting a kink in it so you could flip the mechanism? or if the wife/girlfriend/mom/sister has a small bent icing spatula

just saw this post. My gas door has been 'stuck' for over a year. My solution was using an ice ax as a 'key'. Scared to pooh out of some Oregonian gas attendants (cant pump your own gas there) when I hopped out of the truck wielding the ax. Now days the hatch just flops around like the lower lip of a slack-jawed yocal--rather undignified.

before i put my fiberglass bedsides on, my gas door bounced around alot and it was really annoying. to fix it i took a small magnet and put it on the back side of the door and then put a small bolt with a flat head where the stock rubber bumper was. this held it enough from flappin around but was still easy to open.

To bad the trucks arn`t set up like first gen 4Runners, were you can just pull the cable latch under the dash and the gas door pops open.
