need help 88 yota

i have an 88 toyota sr5 5spd
i got the truck with no gears in the rear end, it has 4.10 gears. i cannot find any toyota trucks in the junk yard and dont have the money right now to buy them off summit.

are 2wd toyota pickups the same rearend. thats the only toyotas in the junk yard around here, or can i find something in a mazda i can throw in my toyota.

Is your truck a 4 cylinder or v6? 4 cylinders had 2 pinion differentials, while v6 trucks had 4 pinion differentials. If you have a 4 cylinder truck, you can put a 4 cylinder or v6 diff in your axle. If you have a v6, don't put a 4 cylinder diff in your axle. It can be done, but they put the extra 2 pinions in the v6 diffs for a reason.

EDIT: Oh, I guess I should answer your original question Both 4wd and 2wd trucks have 8" differentials in the rear. The 2wd will work.

i have a 4cyl. my problem is i cant find any 4wd toyotas in the junk yards by me. would a 2wd 4cyl toyota truck work if it has the 4.10 gears like mine. im pretty new with toyotas. always a chevy guy so i dont know much about them yet. or are mazda parts interchangeable with toyota

He answered your question, any diff from a 4 or 6 cylinder will fit, 2WD or 4WD. Don't think Mazda parts are compatible at all.

No no no no NO!!!

2WD and 4WD rear axles DO NOT ALL HAVE THE SAME GEARS!!!! Not unless the 2WD is 1 Ton, or a 2WD 4Runner, does it have 8" gears. The rest have 7.5". And NO, they won't fit in your 4WD rear axle.

V6 or 4cyl. makes almost no difference whatsoever. Both are plenty strong enough to handle anything your Toyota can throw at them. I've been running a 4 cyl. diff behind my V6 for years. Never been an issue. And I haven't gone easy on it AT ALL. Toyota did the 4-pinion diff thing trying to solve a problem that never existed. They really aren't worth the extra weight. And the R&P gears are equal in strength to any 86-95 4 cyl. gears. Basically pointless to run a V6/Turbo diff.

As for the v6 diff vs. 4 cylinder diff, it couldn't really hurt to have the v6/turbo diff if you can find one. You're actually the first person I've read of that is running a 4 cyl. diff behind a v6. I don't know much about the strength of the 4 cyl diff and I just always assumed having one behind a v6 was no good.

If you can't find gears at the junkyard I'd suggest looking at our classified section to find gears: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f11/ or craigslist. If you want to buy new, look up Trail Gear (or any number of their dealers) or Marlin Crawler.

Mazda B-series and Navajo have Ford 8.8" axles.

Thanks for the help. It's greatly aprretiated. But here's possibly s dumb question. How fo you measure you diff to know if you have a 7.5 or 8 in rearend. It didn't come with the ring gear. Just the carrier or diff. Thanks much just don't wanna screw it up.

Think of all dual transfer case trucks. Most are running them behind 4 cylinders, yes. But, they are usually still running the 2-pinion diffs their trucks came with from the factory too. However, ~5x the torque output of a 4 cylinder through dual t-cases is going to be much greater than ~2.5x the torque output of a V6 with a single t-case. And how many of those guys bother "upgrading" to 4-pinion diffs? Not many. They more than likely will find the need to upgrade to chromo axles before they have diff issues. Meaning, your probably more likely to snap axles with a 2-pinion diff, than busting the gears in the diff. And even if you do have chromo axles installed, you'll still probably bust your ring and pinion before the gears in the diff. So what good does having stronger gears in the diff do you? Not much...if any.

Like I said, they only solve a "problem" that never existed in the first place.

Measure the distance, center-to-center, between 2 opposing bolt holes on the carrier.

7.5" = ~5.5"
8" = ~6 5/16"
