Need better gas millage
#24
The book says to drive the O/D on all the time to get good gas mileage. But when you want an extra gear, for a little more power to turn it off....still really dont understand the whole over drive thing...first vehicle I have bought that has ever had it.

I'm getting 17 mpg and my o/d is not working properly. I use 10w30 Havoline and add a can of Restore to the engine with the oil change, and use Prestone fuel sytsem cleaner. My truck idles high right now also. I always run 65 to 70. I'm sure I will get better once I get my O/D problem fixed and get the Idle where it needs to be.

I also get about 16-17 mpg on my runner with the mods listed below but I need to drive like Granny to get that. I noticed some diff in mpg with the K+N drop in and the exhaust but again, probably not worth it if all looking for is milage and not power.

I have been going on long trips the past three weekends. I have been recording true mileage and speed with GPS. I have been averaging 17 MPG with a 3.0 A/T, 31x10.50 and 4.10 gearing. I have been traveling very flat terrein about 70 MPH.
I have a K&N filter, a little better exhaust than stock, and an electric fan. I keep my engine clean and tuned. I am satisfied with this mileage on the interstate.

I've done quite a few mods that i thought would help my mpg....
1). Electric fan: got about .3-.6 mpg better
2). Manual Hubs: got about 2.0 mpg better
3). ISR, k&n drop in replacement filter: .5mpg better
4). flowmaster 40 series exhaust: .5 mpg better
If you want the best bang for your buck, put on a set of manual locking hubs (your CV's will thank you)
My driving habits are pretty tame. I do about 65% freeway driving. when i got the 4runner, the avg. tank of gas got me about 15.7mpg. After all the mods, I'm about 16.8mpg. When I'm taking road trips, the 4runner used to get about 16.5mpg (stock), and now it gets 19 mpg, so i'm pretty satisfied from the mpg point of view.
I didn't do all these mods strictly for the mpg increase...there were other benefits...throttle response, throatier exhaust, etc, so i wasn't necessarily chasing mpg.
