CHANGE IT!!!

Get a TOYOTA chain. Get metal guides. The plastic ones are crap and teh after market chains are crap.

Okay everyone......

i got on the phone today, and i was tracking down my parts for the timing change. I ended up gettin the number of a backyard mechanic, who works on and owns' 3 4runners, he's got alot of experiance rippin these 22r-e's appart, and he's planning on charging me $200-$240 labour to do the job, not a bad deal at all considering what's involved. He know's exactly what i was talking about regards to the chain and cover.

So the mission is to get my parts, probly through him, wich will include the kit, new accessory belts, new waterpump "a reccomendation i found on this form and a good idea considering the cheap cost of a new water pump" and seals, valve and head gaskets.....

He said he will have my truck for about 2 days, and he's going to drop the oil pan and pull the head... and do all the propper cleaning and re-surfacing.

I want to thank you guy's for helping me out with this, i was really thinking about just ignoring it.... but this is my first 4x4 truck, and i'm all over it like a fat kid on a smartie.... all i want to do is get this timing chain issue behind me so i can start enjoying my 4runner !!!

If any of you have any reccomendations to pass alog by all means do so......

In the future, use Toyota oil filter part# 90915-YZZD1. It has the proper anit-drainback valve that prevents the timing chain from slappin around until the oil pressure comes up. You can get a case of them from EBay for a great price here:

Toyota parts are the OEM parts for our trucks... lol

The filters run about $5-10 at the dealer give or take as I recall cheap at twice the price considering they are superior to anything else out there for our trucks...

Man I really want to see your results, Expecially about the oil pan stuff.

I also have the same exact problem, I hear a rattle on startup for a few seconds, it kinda sounds like a diesel truck.

I took it into my shop for an inspection when I was buying the truck and they said the chain was wearing thru but it isint bad enough to be a priority.
Then I took it to a bigger more reputable shop to get it done, but they said the chain seemed fine. The tech apperentley had a stethascope on the cover and coulden't hear any problems. But they adjusted my valves which made the engine sound way better and saved me almost a grand, but I still hear that damn rattle on start up.

I want to trust them and think it's ok, but I am not to sure.

From what i was told, if you hear the chain rattleing, especially on warm engine it's more noticable, ...... the guides are broken and that's why it's contacting the timing cover. I realy notice it with a warm engine, on start up.... and if you go under the hood whille the engine is running and give it about 1500-2000rpm, steady, you can hear the chain taping the case, every few seconds........ but it's under tension because the engine is revving...

I asked the guy that's doing my truck up, to hold on to the old chain/sprockets so i can take it to work and measure it properly, i'l post some pics of that when i get it too. He just started the job on my 4Runner today at about 1pm, so i'l have a few beer and give him a shout tonight to see where he's at. I wish he lived closer because i really wouldn't mind grinding and painting the valve cover... would have been nice...

I would take your truck to toyota, and get the oil changed or somthing, and ask a tech for his opion on your chain..... Can't hurt.

Good luck... to us both !!! "DAMN TIMING CHAIN NEVER CAME IN TO PARTS........ EVERYTHING IS ON HOLD UNTIL JULLY 6TH......."

I hope this is the one glitch for the job......
