Is my 1st Gen window switch bad?

Well the 87's window will roll up and down. The problem is the guy that I bought it from gave me a little jumper wire to make it do so. I removed the window switch from my other 4runner and tried it,to no avail.
The "jumper" is connected to a ground and then touched to one of the prongs on the wiring harness where the switch typically goes down.
My thought process says that the switch is just improperly groounded.
Any ideas,it did a search but it didn't turn up information like my situation.
Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a ground problem to me. Is this the side windows, or the back window? My first gen rear switch was problematic until I dismantled and cleaned it.

from what you are describing it sounds like an improper ground to me too.

I hate the ghetto-riggers that do stuff like that. My wife's mr2 is like that, the PO broke the connector from the mirror to the switch, so he put a bunch of butt connectors on the wires, and pushed them onto the switch plugs. And we wondered why the mirrors only worked some of the time...

It is the rear window. Do I just need to follow the ground's in the harness out? When the rear windshield wiper isn't in the "holder" and does its safety switch unground the system, does the winshiled wiper sitting in the holder complete the ground?

I'm pretty sure the wiper being in its cradle is necessary for the window motor circuit to be complete. I't has to have something to do with the motor/arm position. Also, make sure the wiring harness is plugged in between the cap and bed. Also, I'm not sure where, but there's a longer bolt holding on the top in 1st gens that pushes a switch and tells the rear window it can roll down.

I like to kindly refer to these little problems as DSPO (DipS#*% Previous Owner) Modifications. I've never bouht a used vehicle without them, but it feels SOOO good to fix them the right way and know they probably won't break again.

On the driver side of the vehicle the...third bolt from the back maybe...has to be in for the window to work. There are all sorts of problems with these, sometimes it is the wiring, sometimes it is the switch, sometimes it is the motor, sometimes it is the relay, etc, etc.
I run a soft top 3/4 of the year so it isn't a problem, but during the winter I run a hard top, my window stopped working this past. The motor is good, the relay is good, the switch is good, the required bolts are in place. I can only assume that there is a problem in my wiring somewhere...I had bigger problems this winter though and never solved this one. I just grabbed a wiring harness from a truck for free, so I will throw that in and see if that is it.
