metal on the drain plug

I'm doing an synthetic fliud change on the rig and on the drain plug for the tranny there was a little bit of metal. I mean a VERY little bit but it still made me pause. There was about enough metal (about as big as dust particles) to half cover my pinkie finger nail, should I be concerned? I'm willing to bet that fluid hasn't been changed in 179,000 miles due to the thick black look that it had and the smell. I'm hoping the syn will last at least that long.

Thank you.

Shouldn't be big deal. Its normal to see a tiny bit of metal dust. Its just wear and tear. If it was larger than dust sized particles, then it may be an issue!

I agree. Most likely not a big deal, particularly if it's only as much as you said and hasn't been changed in a while... but that doesn't mean there's not more elsewhere just waiting to get washed down by clean synth oil.

a little fine shavings is normal; why would manufacturer put magnets on the plugs if they weren't expecting to catch something

it doesn't matter what weight of oil you use, or what brand you use and how much $$$ you pay for it, it's still metal to metal contact, and a little wear is GOING to happen over time...
