You know that point when you turn the key from off->acc->run and the dash lights up "bulb check" .. If it doesn't come on then it's not going to come on and warn you later. ;-) you either don't have a bulb, don't have a wire or don't have a sender.

the one in my “older” ‘87 works. it was on for much of the day. when i filled up yesterday, put 17.2 gallons in the tank. i almost always run the tank until the light comes on.

perhaps on the later trucks; most assuredly not the case for 1st gen 4runners. my low fuel light is fully operational. it does not light up on initial key on sequence when other gauge lights come on. ever.

Thanks, I think I finally found the part number for an SR5 (83320-80178)here: https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem-...-JPP&Filter=() Says discontinued.

My original DLX cluster did not have a low fuel light in it, but it did have a three wire sender and wiring for that light to the cluster.

I’d look at the wiring going to the sender. If it has three wires going into the sender and three at the harness you likely have the wiring. I would do the FSM check to see if the light comes on if you have the three wire sender.

If the cluster light doesn’t come on with the FSM procedure, I would then pull the cluster and check the bulb directly. If the bulb is good, I would then check the cluster for continuity and see if I could get the bulb to come on by applying voltage and ground to the appropriate pins on the cluster. If that works I would check for continuity of the harness wiring.

If if you don’t have a three wire sender you are looking at dropping the tank and putting in an appropriate three wire sender and running a wire to the cluster.

not to go off topic, but I just thought about this. I added some foglamps to my truck and used this OEM Toyota accessory fog lamp switch. It has an indicator light built in. It was like $8.

ok like $15 I guess
