Low compression on cylinder 3
Hey guys,
I just bought a 1984 pickup with 22re. (posted here to get more views) This is my 4th 22re pickup and I am very happy to have one again after going without for a few years. The truck sat for roughly 4-5 years. The truck fired up easy-peasy but ran poorly until I filled up with premium gas. I checked the fluids and cruised around town for a bit before making the 200km trip home. Truck had good power and ran OK. Seemed to run smoothly on the highway. However the truck was pretty loud and had a very noticeable ticking noise. When I got home I pulled the valve cover and set the valves (.007 and .011 cold). At this time I also checked the timing chain. Exhaust side chain guide was broken at the top mounting point but was still mostly intact. (project for another day). Immediately after setting the valves I checked the compression on each cylinder. Cylinders 1,2,and 4 were good. Cylinder 3 was low with around 40psi. I put the plugs back in a fired it up. The ticking noise was dramatically reduced and the truck ran much smoother. After cruising around for a few minutes it lost power and the idle was rough. Is it possible I just got some carbon buildup on a cylinder 3 valve? Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul

Truck sat for 4-5 years? Did you just put a battery in and crank it right up? It is always exciting to here a motor fire up but if it has sat for that long, I never just crank one over. I soak the cylinders in Marvel Mystery Oil and then try to turn motor over with a wrench. Reason being is the rings can rust to the cylinder walls. The starter is powerful enough to break the rust. I have seen it 3 times where a motor has broken the rust and the ring got broke.
The broken ring will work itself out between the piston and cylinder and leave a deep gouge in the cylinder wall. You may not have that problem but you are going to have to start doing some trouble shooting. With a little fluid in the cylinder does that bring your compression up for a little while on a test?
