Loud pop after gasket repair

So I’ve spent the past week replacing the seal on my oil pan, the timing cover gasket, oil pump gasket, and water pump gasket trying to get rid of my oil leak on my 90 pickup with the 22re. I just finished everything today and put oil and coolant in to start it. I disconnected the distributor from the coil and let it spin a few times and then connected the wire and went to start it for real. Except no start, instead it gave a loud pop which was my air filter popping off the air pipe. I’m not sure if I accidently left something in there or if I did something wrong when it came to the timing. I didn’t take the timing chain off, and I put the distributor right back where it started. Does anyone have any idea what I did wrong. I’m not gonna start tonight but I have a feeling my already hard job became a lot more difficult and expensive.

I bet your timing is off, are your plug wires in the correct order? 1342?

Could have possibly rotated the distributor 90 or 180 degrees out?

I think that might be it. I put the distributor back where it was but I turned the crank so I must have moved it. How am I supposed to get the timing right again now. It seams like guess work to get it close.

You need to have the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke, which is TDC with both valves closed. Then take the distributor out and rotate the gear until the rotor is at the #1 and put back in. See what you need here is the distributor firing on the #1 cylinder when it is on the compression stroke.

Understanding how something works before you work on it makes your job tons easier. The otto cycle or known as 4 stroke has been around for about 140ish years now. Its not rocket science........

Distributor installed incorrectly.

Rotor button needs to be pointing at #1 on the Distributor Cap, while #1 cylinder is at TDC.

Just gotta make sure you are on the compression stroke when TDC. You can be at TDC and still be 180 degrees out of time.

yup timing is way early, you got spark before the intake valve was closed so it backfired up through intake thats also why the air cleaner hose came off also check all of your vacuum hoses to its a good chance some of those came off as well
