Exclamation Loose shifter?! No Reverse?!

Lately I've heard a small noise coming from (what I imagine) the manual transmission/clutch. Today while out wheeling reverse suddenly dissappeared... instead of going into reverse everything over there seemed to be fifth gear and it could move all over to the right.

Its an 88 Ext Cab Pickup with v6 engine and tranny.

When moving the shifter I could almost touch the passenger seat with it. 1st through 4th gear were all in place. I could find fifth and put it in gear... but reverse just dissappeared and left a huge hole with the end of the shifter swinging a couple of inches in every direction!

Is it the clutch? Did I shatter my reverse gear? I have no idea what it could be aside from that... I've read a lot about master/slave cylinders but I don't know... Any ideas would be great as I'll be playing with it tomorrow.!

Also without reverse would there be a problem driving it for an extended trip? I work about 200 miles away and drive it everywhere.

thanks for the help!

my 94 does the same thing and my prob. is the plastic bushing at the base of the shifter. it sounds like the same symptoms, i can apply very slight torque , counter clockwise to my shifter and it works fine.

Shifter seat and bushing. Mine went out and I lived without reverse or 5th gear for a year! Then I ordered the parts from www.marlincrawler.com they have plastic peices (OEM is rubber), makes the shifter nice and tight!

Check these video clips out (taken way back when, just after I installed the parts): Beware, I cannot take good video clips with a ty digital camera...

Before.

after the marlin shifter seat and bushing.

Well sounds like the right spot! I'm taking it apart in the next few days when I have the new bushing, hopefully that will help!

I've pulled up to a number of holes realizing I probably shouldnt attempt that line... but... no reverse... so onward! Made it rather exciting at times!

Thanks for the input so far, itll probably be Monday before I can get back on here to reply but I'll let you know if that was it!

I second the Marlin Crawler solid urethane shifter bushings. I've been using them for years on Supras.

Usually I order like 10 sets, and sell them to locals to re-coup the $10 cost of shipping a $10 item.

Thats exactly what it was! Was headed out to the dunes and had a friend bring it out to me there! Took all of an hour to put it in!

The seat it sits in was non existant in mine... no parts... no pieces... just gone! Only the bottom rubber flat piece was still intake. Came out easy because it was so loose. Thanks for the input guys! I didnt know what else I'd do!

Now onto the next problem! lol... always a next problem! Got a new driveshaft since I just finished a SAS and the bolts on either end don't line up! Who would have guessed! I took it in once to the shop... fixed it supposedly... they redrilled the holes... still off. I'm about to just take off the flanges... offset the holes and redrill them myself!

Thanks again!
