Plugs, kinda sooty. Guess I'll go get some eh?

Cams out...

Lower intake manifold off...

Mmmm, is this bad?

ANNND, drum roll please... heads off...

So I heard that people have found that taking both heads, both exhaust manifolds, and the crossover pipe off all at the same time is easier. So I tried it. It works and I have proof...

This looks tasty...

Wow...what an ugly mess.

Are those gaskets supposed to be egg shaped around the tops of the cylinders?

Sure you don't want to try the 3.4 swap instead?

Nice welds on the SST upgrade lol.

That looks nasty inside lol. for plugs, I hear the NGK v or g powers are perfect. 2.50/3 a piece.

GREAT WORK!

The gaskets are off in those pictures. lol.

And if the block is screwed I wont even waste my time on the 3.0. Wich will be sweet cuz I'll have a 3.4 but suck because it'll be another year before I get to drive it lol.

Man, that's some good work you've done, but it looks pretty muffed up in there. I second the 3.4 idea. I think if you work with the same diligence you have with the 3.0 so far you'll have it done and running in a weekend! lol

GOOD LUCK!!!

So for the typical head gasket job do you just put new head gaskets on and put it back together?

I'm not positive because I haven't done one (knocks on wood*) but I think you replace all the gaskets in that area and make sure the block is not cracked due to overheating and then make sure you seal it up all nice and pretty and then put it back together. But wait for other people to answer or SEARCH. It's a pretty extensively covered issue with these 4Runners.

All you HAVE to do is replace the headgasket itself, but most people buy a full gasket set and replace everything.

For my Honda you could buy kits: upper engine, lower engine, and complete. I don't know if you can find the same stuff for Toyotas but I'd recommend getting a set of gaskets for the upper half of the engine since its already disassembled.

EDIT: I also recommend copper gasket spray. You spray it on both sides of the head gasket, wait till its tacky, and install it. It'll fill in any small scratches on the mating surfaces and make a better seal. Can't go wrong with it.

I agree. I'm not sure about that gasket spray, I know we used some kind of tacky substance when we were re-gasketing my neighbors Petrol, but idk the name. So some kind of epoxy is a good idea at least.

I would but the only thing that is stopping me is money. At least if this is running when I pull it I can get some cash for it.

If that is the ONLY thing that is wrong yes. But if it was over heated you need to have your heads and block resurfaced so that they are flat. They will warp if overheated and wont seal.

So after my three day weekend I'm back to work with much less time for the truck.

I managed to talk one of the mechanics into letting me borrow this tool for the crank bolt...

Finally got it off. It was more of a PITA sliding the pulley off than getting the bolt out once I had that tool.
