Haha thanks but shes no where near a puppy. lol

Little more done today. I'm about to the point where I need to get the FSM so I know what to take off in what order. Any body know where in the FSM it talks about replacing the head gasket? The way the PDF is setup is a PITA.

Belt has 25000 on it should I replace it?

if you can afford it, depending on how old everything is, I would say replace the idler pulley, water pump, and the belt. You are already in there... if not the idler pulley, do the water pump and the belt. Besides, if that water pump is as old as it looks, just spend the money and replace it before it fails and you have to do head gaskets again... This way it is that much longer before you have to tear it all apart again haha.

of course, it is a non-interference engine, so you could really leave the belt on til it snaps... I dunno, its your call, but personally I am the kinda person that likes to take care of all that stuff all at once, then I can rest knowing its all good to go.

you should clean up the engine bay if you have time... I love your runner, and that would make it that much sweeter haha.

Nice truck. 3.4 Swap.

Have to agree with Wab on this one. Save your pennies and watch for a good deal. It's going to be way better in the long run.

Ooops, that was a 6 month old post. My bad.

Still......

bigtrucknwheels - thanks, I'll will try to replace everything but $ is tight.

RobD - I will probably do it in the future. I cant make up my mind between a 5vz or a 1uz. I know the 5vz will be an easier install but the 1uz would be just plain badass when finished.

Dipstik - It didnt come with the truck from factory. The original owner bought it shortly after he bought the truck. I actually have the receipt for it. I have a smaller round one that came on my '82 and I like it alot better. It is much more comfortable and I think its better looking too. Even though its brown I'm still going to put it in the 4runner.

He bought it from Stevens Creek Toyota in San Jose, CA in June of '97 for $11.62. Part number was "Shift Knob". I dont think it was a "Toyota" part. It was just a ramdon accesory they carried in the parts department.

Curse these damn cam gears. I wanted to have this thing apart by the time my ENGNBLDR stuff gets here. I guess I will have to go find a cam holder thing so I can get the bolts off. Ughh, the closest parts store is 20 mintues away and I dont get my check till monday.

haha yeah... mmmm...

do you have access to an impact gun? that would take off those cam bolts without the need of an SST... if not, try wedging the sprocket in place and then attacking it haha.

I might be able to borrow one. I do know of one but it is pneumatic and our compressor is bolted to the floor in our shop about 100 yards from the garage. useless.

MMMmmmm gatorade!

Valve covers off...

Do you think these spaces on the cam where I can put a wrench would be strong enough to yank on the bolts with? I tried for a bit and was pulling pretty hard but the crescent wrench was slipping off of the cam and I dont want to round it off.

forgot about those. I think those are strong enough, and IIRC, thats what those are for. please stand by for someone with more knowledge to chime in.

if they are strong enough, just get a very large pair of vice grips and clamp those babies on there, I bet it won't round off...

That's exactly what those spots in the cam are for. Find the right size wrench and giver! lol
