Lets play, Fix that sound! (Engine troubles)

Here is a few videos of my truck reving. as posted in a different thread, I have been having trouble with it, problem seems to be a loose wire/connector that I can't find.

Truck would run great one moment, run like crap the next. Hitting bumps would trigger it being good/bad. I was also able to wiggle the main engine wiring harness and make it good/bad, but it just runs bad all the time now.

Bad as in it sounds like it is misfiring, and has almost no power when moving.... Highway speeds are not possible.

I recorded videos at the engine compartment, the tail pipe, and the driver seat.

I am currently removing the intake manifold so I can get a better look at the wires and connectors... I will post pics when it is off.

Images of plenum & fuel rail pulled

After taking the intake off, I found that I have a new head in my truck, and the guy screwed up the intake gasket. Also found 1/4" of crud inside the plenum and intake... very thick sticky black goo kinda like hot fudge, but room temp. Found this was all over the place, and in some spots completely clogging ports on the plenum. So during the next week I will be cleaning these out while waiting for my new fuel injectors and gasket set.

Hey, first thing I did when I got the truck (2 weeks ago) was plugs, wires, ignition coil, and the cap & rotor looked brand new.

I think/hope I won my own game and that the bad intake gasket & sludge were causing all this trouble... but no way to know till I get it all back together... and that wont be for another week.

i doubt it was the whole issue...You stated that you could jiggle the harness and it would go back and forth. Sounds like you gotn an electrical gremlin. You might want to start tracing wires and see if any are broken.

While deaper in the project (cleaning the sludge) turns out, the entire EGR port in the plenum, from back to front was 100% solid sludge.

Found half an air filter IN the plenum, pretty much every connector is broken and rigged back together... soooo.... time to go back to the junk yard and grab a new harness.

On a side note, I checked 10+ toyota pickups, and 3 - 4runners at the local bone yard, not a single one, had anything like the sludge I found in mine, and they had some 350k+ mile trucks.

On a side note, anyone near adelanto, ca - theres 3 4 runners at ecology auto parts.

An 86, an 89, and a 96 (i think a 96). The 86 = stripped, only thing decent on it was the top/ windows/ rear bumper.

The 89 = gutted beyond gutted... not even interior panels were left, but it did have a sunroof in good condition.

the 96 = Mint condition exterior, interior in great condition, and half the engine missing. Leather seats and such... no rips.

As for the trucks.... EVERY SINGLE truck and 4 runner I found, had the front left lens, and rear right lens busted. Also, every single truck I checked, the engine wiring harness was wrecked worse than mine.

Update, replaced all 4 fuel injectors with brand new ones, still hesitates.

Did a compression check, and they are all fine (120 +/- 5psi) on all 4, so its a tiny bit low, but even.

Something VERY odd found, when unplugging all the sparks (1 at a time), when #4 is disconnected, the engine revs UP about 200 rom, it seems to run a little smoother too. My headers dont look stock, and the o2 sensor is only on cyl 3 & 4.

I guess its time to bring it to the dealership and pay 95 bucks for a diagnostic

Update: went to the delearship for a diagnostic... $100 and they fixed the issue for me... The #4 cyl fuel injector connector was busted, the pin came out partially... so it looked ok, but wasnt making a connection. But I still feel like an idiot for not catching this.... i took the plenum off 3 freekin times, and the intake twice, looking for issues. And the first cyl had the same issue, but i saw and fixed that myself before the dealership diagnostic.

Runs good now, just dropped a bunch of $$ on new shocks, steering damper, radio, wires, and speakers... MUCH happier with the truck now.
