Legroom

Well I haven’t been on here for a while but since I bought a car for a second vehicle and I am debating fixing up the truck or selling it. My biggest issue with keeping it has always been legroom. I am 6'3 and with a regular cab and the stock bench there is no choice but to straddle the steering wheel making it’s very uncomfortable to drive and change gears.

Is it possible to gain any legroom by installing bucket seats? I am not expecting miracles just something to make it a bit more tolerable. What kind of buckets would give me the most room? Thanks!

hmmmm...........
Iam only 5'6" so i dont have the same issue but it seems to me you might gain a little with buckets by running the seat back up straighter to get the seat bottom back further. sadly these were designed for short people (yeah, the Japanese). if you pull the trim loose where the upper seatbelt bolt is youll notice there is even a place to mount the belt lower for shorter drivers!!!!!

I am 5'11 and I dont like being that close to the wheel.....have you thought about selling what you got and getting a extended cab..I have 96 and a 89 and both of them are roomy, plus there is a place for all your junk in the back

Just get a set of buckets and mount them back farther to the rear, might need to look for thin buckets if thats the case

My 86 has SR5 buckets and there is a difference. I think it's enough to be worthwhile. Have you considered a smaller steering wheel? It's on my list of things to check out.

I have been considering both a smaller wheel and SR5 seats, iam curious if other seat would work better though as I dont feel inclined to stick with toyota parts....

Thought about an extended cab but personally I dont like the look of them, I like that the truck is very short and manouverable. If I was going to change to somthing else I would probley get a fullsize domestic for more comfort but I dont have any plans to change.

I had a set of Fiero seats in one of my old V-Dubs, the backs on those were very thin, it would allow you to gain some room with the seat all the way back.

Swap an X-cab onto your short bed frame...gain the room you need and maintains the short wheelbase your like...

Maybe this is noob question, but how does that work? Do you cut out a portion of the bed or something so that the wheel wells line up, or do you just go the flatbed route?

from what I've read everywhere ppl are generally getting 2 bucket seats for 20$ or so.

I'm 6'4" and luckily I have the ext cab so I don't have that problem but if I was in a std cab and needed more room. 20$ would be spent quickly as I could get on cl or the junkyard.

My stepdad has a std cab and he is taller than me plus 120 lbs and he doesn't complian abt any room. So I guess bucket seats would work out for you and be the easiest route.

I'm 6'2" and only 30" inseam. I put some celica seats in. It took some minor mod skill and half a day. Here is the thing, your knees are way up high. And if you don't have cruise, you can't even wiggle around to keep from cramping. All your weight is on your butt, can't put any on your thighs cause they are sticking up in the air. Kinda fun to drive for a bit. Not as comfortable as any full size truck I've ridden in. I just got ahold of a t100 extra cab. I bought it just because it has nice seats. It looks bad. The truck thing is like shoes. Some people wear walmart shoes. Their feet don't hurt so they don't shop around. A dose of irony, the newish tundras are supposed to have huge cabs. fwiw

i put seats from a 4 door car in my truck but i'm only 5' 10" so its not a big deal.

and i'd look into a small wheel, too.

In my case, raising the seat even 1/2" would put my head up against the headliner with a bench seat/regular cab.

There is not much to do, to gain more room. My son has a 94 pickup and we put SR5 seats out of a 95 4 Runner in it, (they bolt right in, no fab needed) and there is just no room.

My son is 6'1 and has the seat all the way to the back, against the back of the cab and has to drive with his legs in a V to straddle to steering wheel. The only thing we could think of was to either change the steering wheel for a smaller diameter or find a tilt column and swap it in to the truck.

We are currently looking for a loaded 1994 pickup or 4 Runner to snag the tilt assembly.

Toyota buckets seats are really low to start with and you cant get much lower without major fabbing of the seat rails. Being tall in a single cab Toyota is tough.
