Legal exhaust decibals in WI

I just got pulled over this last weekend for my exhaust being "too loud" and ended up getting a ticket for something else while i was pulled over. My lawyer says we may be able to get it thrown out if i can find what is legal for my state and find a place to get it tested. I was wondering if anybody might know where i can find this kind of law and where i could get my truck tested. Thanks much in advance.
P.s. I live in Wisconsin and its a 3.0 p/up w/ downey headers, 2 1/2 inch pipe to hi flow cat then flowmaster 40 and 2 1/4 to the tip.

what did you end up getting a ticket for if it wasn't for being too loud. From your description it seems that your rig would be pretty loud to me. I guess im just a quite guy.

Universal Cat and a rusted out pos exhaust that im replacing with a raptor next spring when it rusts out fully this winter.

See if your state's vehicle code is available on the web, many states do this.

In fact a simple Google search reveals this:

(4) 80 dBA Noise Limit. It shall be unlawful for any person to cause noise levels from the operation of a light motor vehicle in excess of 80 dBA at any location within the corporate limits of the City of Madison. Measurement can be made at any distance greater than or equal to fifteen (15) feet from the closest approach to the vehicle.

This is for madison only though. What city did you get pulled over in, cuz I think this will make a difference.

On a side note my brother goes to UWSP.

a stero shop might do it for you other than that i wouldnt know where else would be able to test it. 80db ant much thats crazy. i dont see how he could tell that you were to loud does he have some db gauge in his head or somethin.

that might be your saving grace if he didn't have a db meter...but then again, he didn't write you the ticket for noise pollution so the ticket might stick. if it does stick, chalk it off to experience. driving a noticeable vehicle comes with a price. my rule of thumb is to do as little as possible to give 'em a reason to pull me over. my rig may be tall, it may look aggressive, it might even sound mean, but if it exceeds the law, then i'm responsible for it. just my $0.02

Thanks everyone, good call on the stereo shop being able to test the db, i bet that will work. The cop said "only the stock exhaust is legal". He was a state trooper so he thinks he knows everything and then some. I did kind of have it coming as the truck is a sore thumb, but i rarely drive like a jerk.
I got a dwi, which is kind of embarrassing but i was just over the limit (wisconsin's slogan "buzzed driving is drunk driving"), first offense ever. I was at my dads helping him cut wood and had to pickup my bartender girlfriend after work so she didnt have to walk home (dont know what kind of creep will follow a pretty girl home). I drove past a bar fight on my way to her bar and the trooper followed me and pulled me over a quarter block from where i was going.
I also got a warning for tires sticking out too far and too dark of tint (i have 18%, 50% is legal) And for the record, UWSP rocks.

A friend of mine got busted in wisconsin and we had to put a crappy oval muffler on it to get the pigs to sign the paper, cuz they said stock exhaust only. do you go to UWSP?

80 db!?!?! that's rediculously low for a noise limit. i mean, for comparison, exhaust systems like the trd setup claims sound to be in the high 80s range and if you think about it, most yotas out there with exhaust work done and loud mud tires will probably make close to 80 db in the cab while around interstate speeds. but best of luck to ya with the ticket as it sounds like you should win your case...

That's some BS right there. Here's how you beat that again....bog it a little when you go past the cops. Using the " I pay your salary" excuse won't help your cause any.

most states the rule is that you have to have stock exhaust meaning they expect everyone in the rust belt to shell out $2k to the dealer after stuff starts rusting through, vs. putting non stock stuff on at a muffler shop.

yeah it sucks, usually they wont pull you over for that stuff unless you're driving like an ass, or they're having a bad day.

It should just be an equipment ticket though. $50, and no effect on insurance. Probably not worth even trying to fight that.

Tryed to get a sound clip with my cellphone, not working. Maybe my girlfriends camera will do it. I didnt get a ticket for the exhaust but thats the reason i got pulled over, but the dwi ticket is $793 plus $280 for the assesment to get my license back and then whatever insurance extras. If i can prove my exhaust is legal i might get the whole thing thrown out. I do go to UWSP, my second year at this school, pretty good time.

they wont throw the rest out just because you were pulled over for something that didn't actually exist.

I'm just listening to what the lawyer said. Its kind of ironic because i guarantee my truck is no louder than a stock harley or my rocket. Whatever, thats life right?
