Knock or Tick? WHY?

So I just drove a 400 mile trip on my 22RE, and halfway through I started hearing a ticking when I was in gear and moving. Not under load, either accelerating or decelerating, only when no load was on the engine like when I would just start to let off the throttle.

This sound is completely gone when the truck is sitting at idle, but when I repeatedly rev it in neutral I can hear it.

I just (15,000 miles ago) completely rebuilt the motor with an engnbldr kit. Torkr cam, O/S stainless valves, guides, seals, all bearings, gaskets, timing chain, guides, etc. The Full Meal Deal. engnbldr is a Great company and Great parts - the way to go, which is why this tick (or knock) is frustrating!

I've heard 22R rod knock before and seems WAY louder than this, and more consistent, but maybe its a baby knock growing?

The one thing I re-used form the original set-up was the rocker arm assembly... but I wiggled the rocker arms to check and didn't see any play...

So I was hoping it was just valves out of adjustment so I re-adjusted (they weren't really off) to .008 and .012 but it didn't help.

Soooo short of pulling the motor and checking the bearings, I was hoping for some input from YotaTech.

Please and Thank You.

oh and its a 1986 22RE 4x4

Well, in a moment of clarity I pulled the spark wires off one at a time and the noise quit when I pulled the #3 Cylinder's spark plug wire. So it looks like I'm ripping into the motor to fix a rod knock today. Hooray.

Thats a bummer man! I had a similar noise when I bought my runner. I kept hoping it was something else (but deep down knew it was a knock). eventually the day before I was supposed to drive 500 miles home from college, it went from just occurring when not under load, to very loud and bad, all the time with a complete loss of power. it was bad. the two halves of the #2 rod bearings had slipped over each other and fused together. Needless to say that motor is currently apart and waiting to be taken to the machine shop. Had to get new rods for it as a result.. that sucked.
