Hi Guys

Today i recieved my shipment of 4 x pro comp ES9000 shock absorbers and an ES2000 steering stabilizer, the steering stabilizer took longer than expected but i got it fitted, was tough getting the nuts on the end as the bushings were so stiff but sure i got it

Ive the 2 front shocks in too, they were prob the easiest set of shocks ive ever done

BUT..........

The rears.......how on earth do i get to that top mount???? im looking at about 3/4 of an inch gap inbetween the chassis and the body, i cant think of anyway to get a tool in there????? bottom mount wont be a problem but the top im faced with a problem..... i havent tried properly yet as i got too busy so didnt attempt the rears but has anyone got any advice????

 

oh man maybe a 17mm ratcheting style box end? or maybe its a 19mm? thats what i would try cuz its just a short little bolt

 

It can be done and there are other threads on it. Box wrench is your best bet. I replaced the shocks twice on my 4Runner and it was a PITA each time.

 

When you American folk say "box wrench" what exactly do you mean?? I had a quick look when I pulled in....it looks like I may be able to reach around and get something on it from the back...don't think it's possible going at it from the side ??

 

I just put those shocks on my friends 88 pu - we used an open end wrench but I don't remember what size - probably 17mm or 19mm

 

And did you go in from the back of the truck?? Well not the back but reach around to the back from the wheel arch???

Mc Quaid, a box wrench is just a regular old wrench. One side is open ended, the other side is a loop with a hex shape in it.
Oh and in certain parts of the world, anything 4WD is considered a jeep ._.

 

idk about on yalls generation of 4runner..but the rears on my '86 pickup took like....5mins to do???...thats running around getting some air hose and the impact from across the shop..(BIG shop too)..getting a wrench on one side and just poppin em loose and throwin my new ones on??..lol..MAYBE 7mins TOPS

 

That makes me sad. The last thing I wanna drive is a JEEP! ha

 

Haha, sorry about that. It's kinda like you saying "Kitting Out." I had no idea what that meant until I googled it...

I found that the ratcheting closed-ended wrenches work really well. I had to approach mine from the back, not the side.

 

Ha...yeh over here a jeep is not only 4wd but anything thats big like a stock "truck" but then when its given a lift it then becomes a truck over here......and we dont use the term "wrench" over here...we call em spanners

and camo...this aint a 5/7 min job, must be a diff set up all together..im gonna get cracking on it in about an hour so im sure ill be in touch then

 

and also....my rear shocks came with some weird bushing along with the regular bushings the same as the front...is this to replace in the eyelid at the bottom of the shock or whats it for???

 

ok....i can get access to the top mount, and i can get a ring spanner onto it, its a 14mm by the way...but i cant stop the strut from spinning, ive tried putting a vice grips onto it, actually 2 vice grips but i cant stop it from spinning????

 

Thanks guys...job was a success....all finished with the new struts.....now im just wondering should i attempt the upper ball joints again
