93 22re 5speed 2wheel 4cylinder

just finished rebuilding the engine...
new
-timing chain w/ steel ds guide
-timing chain cover
-wp and op
-new gaskets (oil pan, headgasket, tc gaskets, etc)
-head bolts

got everything back together, no leaks, seeming nothing wrong...so i started the engine. started fine, small exhaust leak...fixed that and restarted the engine. now whenever i start it up it feels like its going to rip itself out of the truck and then chocks itself off. i literally dont have enough time to turn over the engine and then walk to the front of the bay before it kills itself.

from what im reading, its a matter of not enough airflow. i have yet to triple check the vacuum lines nor check to make sure the VAF meter is within tolerance.

does anyone else have any other ideas? or possible opinions?

 

What's the ignition timing set to? (What does the sticker say to set it to?)

 

when i put mine back together i came entirely too close to leaving a rag in the intake manifold..... just hope you didn't do something like that.

 

couldnt tell you what ignition is set to...
but i did find out that when the engine is cool, if you unplug the throttle position if starts up like a dream...for about 5 minutes. then repeats the same ol' process.

 

Ah, I think I see the problem here ....

 

Try turning the dist one way then the other until it stays running.Aside from that make sure all the ground wires are secured on both ends.Post back your results.

 

im a beginner DIYer...so please be gentle with me...

its the dimple set to be the next tooth to engage, i just wasnt sure of the technical term.
it starts fine if the TPS isnt hook up and runs great for the next couple minutes...it seems as soon as it warms up to normal operating temps, i hear a slight squeaking noise (location unknown) and then it slowly bogs down and dies.

thats the part i cant figure out...

 

So can you pat the gas and keep it running or does it die no matter what you do?

 

if i keep a bit of gas going, it will continue to run...but the squeak slowly creeps up.

i believe it may be the valve clearances, which im didnt know how to adjust.
but would that make a squeaking noise in the engine?

and can you run the engine with the rocker cover off for a short while?

 

You can't run the motor with the valve cover off - vacuum leak will kill the motor.

Sounds like you may also be off a tooth on your timing chain OR off a tooth on your distributor drive gear - this happened to me when I did my timing chain the first time a few years back. Check out 92TOY's writeup in his signature - it's FULL of great photos and lessons learned.

I don't think it would be misadjusted valves that would cause it to die....my money is on timing: chain on cam sprocket off a tooth, or distributor drive gear off a tooth. There is a mark on the dizzy drivee gear that has to line up JUST next to the gear on the cam drive gear when at TDC - if you're off just a bit, it will never idle.

 

let me check my dizzy gear, hopefully im off a tooth and this explains my problems...

If you're off a tooth it wouldn't crank. Just turn the dist a lil.

 

ok...disregard.

it wasnt a matter of (serious problem A or B)...my dad walked up and took a 2 minute look and went "why dont you set your idle dummy?" and wouldnt you know it, it now runs like a charm.

i was about to be upset if after taking this engine apart 2 times during the timespan of a month...if i had to take it apart AGAIN or spend even more money on it.

sorry for wasting everyones time for such a "de de dee" issue...
