No problem! I bet you thought I was crazy, though. I'm glad you have narrowed it down. A digital volt and ohm meter should be able to be had for around $20 at sears. They have a nice small one perfect for your needs. You should be able to find a used TPS for cheap seeing as how the 3.0 get parted out alot. Good luck!

Sears! Just because they have top quality and lifetime warranty?

Real hackers only shop one place: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-funct...ter-90899.html

(This is actually a pretty decent meter - and if you get on HF's mailing list, the price can be lower -- I was just there, and with a $10 purchase and coupon this meter was .... FREE!)

PS In the photo your finger is pointing to the actuator for the PAIR valve. If you look at the aft end of the vertical part, you'll see a thin metal cover held on with four screws. At least it's supposed to have four screws; I can see in your picture (from the 'wrong' side) that you're missing at least one screw. When these get loose (or go missing) that metal plate makes a loud buzzing sound.

OR that might not be your engine (it looks like it's sitting in a pickup bed). On an installed engine there isn't much room to get at the PAIR valve. I suggest getting replacement screws with allen (hex) heads so you can use an allen wrench, rather than trying to wedge a stubby screwdriver in there (I believe they are 5mm screws.)

Good luck!

Yeah, you can run it for a while without the TPS hooked up, its not the worst thing in the world.

As for a harbor freight multi-meter. You get what you pay for and checking ohms you don't really want to be off. For reading B+ and B- harbor freight is OK, but, for ohm testing circuits I wouldn't buy it.

so techinally if you boght the truck from someone ur not immediatelyh related to, that person that owned it before has to make sure it pases smog tests before they can sell it to you
otherwise, you would be buying it from salvage and then you mjight have to do repars and smog it urself and thn th title woudl say that
Not if the guy before him had it in non-op status. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...cts/ffvr01.htm
Plus he only has 10 days after buying the truck to bring up anything that the previous owner. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm

... But the remedy is not that the seller has to get you a smog certificate, rather the seller has to give you your money back.

So if you got the truck for free, your remedy is to give back the truck in exchange for no money.

Or if the Seller says "eh, I don't know why it's failing smog, but I'll sell you this otherwise-cherry 1992 pickup for $250...." , you can get your $250 in exchange for the truck. I don't know NorCal's deal, but if he can stabilize his rpm's may come out on top.

Oh, and when I say "remedy" I mean legal remedy, as you get when you hire a lawyer. Something you might do for $10,000, not as likely for $1,000.

i hate inspectiln stations, they're so careless, the cracked the frame on my buddys 79 corvetter 10 years ago when they put it up on the lift, he filed a thing with the dmv and they told him to call his concerned congrassman, who never returned his phone calls or ansered his phone

no, and to make matters worse, they failed him, when he returned for re-inspection they put the car on the lift and raised hell about the cracked frame, he started arguing with them saying he wants it fixed becaused they broke it, they said they're not responsible, so after about an hour of intense arguing he hopped in his vette and drove away before they completed the inspectiin...i guess the d-head at the ispection station got his revenge because a week later he got a letter in the mail, his vette now has a salvage title, and its never gonna be allowed on the road again. to this day, my buddy dave is still infuriated
